He had to grow the moustache
Maybe I’m late to the party but, BUT
“Oh, blame it on the illustrator. He’s out of control. I’ve had to grow this moustache just so people’ll recognise me.” (thank you to Ariane for her transcript)
The moustache, a.k.a. the mournstache, was a part of John’s with Mary. John “I don’t shave for Sherlock Holmes” Watson shaved that facial hair as soon as he could after Sherlock “let’s make fun of his moustache” Holmes reappeared in his life.
So what is the point of this line dropped by Dr. Watson on TAB? Perhaps because it is part of his “I’m not gay, look I have a wife and everything” persona. Because otherwise, John Watson would definitely be in danger from (assumptions on?) the nature of his connection to Sherlock Holmes - this is, after all, 1895.
The real question is: who is the illustrator in Sherlock’s head?
