Tonight - the Cinemaps Show opens 7 at @g1988 . The shows celebrates the book release of Cinemaps: An Atlas of 35 Great Movies with maps by yours truly with essays by the great A.D. Jameson. One of my favorite parts of making the book was “bookending” the work I’d already created which focused on movies mostly from the 80′s. I got to backtrack pop culture a bit to it’s beginnings in film - and a big one was Victor Fleming’s adaptation of Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz”. It’s a wild, trippy, movie, and I tried to do it justice. References from this show up everywhere, from an homage shot of Frodo, Sam and Gollum looking at the Black Gate just as the Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man spied on the Witch’s castle, the Emperor’s appearance as a giant transparent floating head in Empire Strikes Back mirroring the appearance of the great and powerful Oz, and so many more. This painting was made over the course of months: hundreds of hours, and it’s one I love, and I think it’s worth checking out in person. The original gouache on paper painting and prints will be available tonight at Gallery1988, and online tomorrow at the G1988 site.
