The Corruption of a Corrupt Town
There were things Jack missed about working in life insurance - the decent office hours paramount among them. Still, as he eased his car onto the dimly lit streets of LA at the god awful hour of five in the morning, he tried to convince himself of the ups of this new job. The excitement, for one. Working at California Fire and Life had made left him feeling anxious; like he was ready to crawl out of his skin if he had to sit one more day for eight hours of filing paperwork.
By the time the sun rose full in the sky that morning, the papers would be screaming with the headlines: Official suspected of working with mob found dead. Of course, Jack had been given next to nothing about the situation - only that it was an important guy who had been found in the wrong place at the wrong time one too many times and now he was laying in a hotel lobby with a bullet in his skull and it was Jack's job to elbow his way through the vice cops on scene to figure out exactly what happened before the bullet to the brain.
Vice. Which meant he'd more than likely run into Cole's flashy former partner, Roy Earle. The prospect made Jack wish he'd stayed in bed. Or stayed with life insurance.
The hotel, while cordoned off, was already swarming with lookie-loos, despite the early hour. He even caught sight of a woman holding the hand of a small child, no older than five, the woman standing on her tiptoes in an effort to catch sight of what had disrupted the street. Jack pulled into the parking lot, seeing with dismay that, yes, Earle's flashy Caddy was parked nearby.
It was too early for this shit.
Adjusting his jacket and pulling his badge from his pocket, he made his way to the officer standing near the entrance.
"Sorry, sir, you can't - " the beat cop started, holding a hand up towards him. Jack flashed his badge, feeling a childish sense of pride.
"Jack Kelso, DA's Investigator." He waited as the cop peered at his badge, verifying that he was, indeed, okay to step onto the crime scene.
"Third floor, Room 4." The kid nodded in the direction of the front desk and Jack gave a curt nod, muttering thanks before he made his way into the hotel.
The place was glitzy enough and he really shouldn't have been surprised. An official working with the mob meant the guy had plenty of money coming from both sides of the law - guy like that wouldn't have set foot in the warehouse district.
The body had already been taken away and the only people still lingering in the lobby were a couple of homicide detectives and a reporter. Jack breezed by them, making for the elevator and up to the third floor. At least he wouldn't have to deal with the body itself - things like that still gave him the shakes and made it hard to breathe.
The elevator dinged, announcing his arrival and he hesitated a moment in the doorway, catching sight of a small group of detectives wandering in and out of one of the rooms at the end of the hall. Sure enough, a blur of a salmon colored suit flashed by the open door of the room and he sighed.
Steeling himself for the encounter, Jack stepped out into the hallway, not sure if he should be flashing his badge again or assume they would know he had reason to be there.
"Morning, gentlemen." He nodded at the detective closest to him. "Jack Kelso, DA's Investigator. What have you found so far?"
