“I see you liked the sketch I did. I’m glad.” he said plainly as he placed both hands on his hips. Scout definitely grew on Cole despite his initial skepticism of the kid’s involvement in police matters. Of course, it didn’t mean he was exempt from the law himself. “Although, I do believe you just admitted that you have committed theft.”

The boy–man? Yes, a young man, early twenties– looked out at her, face oddly angled and the left side swaddled in bandages. Both his arms were restrained, though occasionally his left wrist yanked, sometimes hard, sometimes soft, at its restraint. The right arm was bandaged tightly, so the IV had been obliged to go in the left. The examination gown was open to detail the bruises that clouded his skin, and the bandages that covered the rest of his underfed body.
He blinked, rubbing his face against his shoulder. “My name is Jonathan Th…Ssssspencssser. Jonathan Ssssspencssser Tylan. There wathhha bad place. They did b-bad thingth. I ran. Car hit me, and they said bad things, and my b-b-b-boyfriend…hurt me-e-e-e…” he began to moan, long loud sounds of distress before coughing and trying to settle back into the pillows.
The detective, notebook and pencil ready for the testimony, felt concern run down his cold bones when he saw the way the young man tried his best to give his testimony. On one hand, Cole knew this was a time-sensitive issue, as these cases tend to be, on the other, he knew he had to return another day and let him rest. But he tried his best to make do with the present. If Jonathan ever needed him, he would have his card.
“Jonathan, I want you to take a deep breath and just try to take it slow, okay?” he started before writing down a few details. Cole had to play it by ear. Poor kid could probably not get many words out and there was a a high possibility that the boy was delirious and in shock.
“Please, just start from the beginning. What is this bad place that you speak of?” he asked, in the softest, most sincere and concerned voice he could muster.

“It’s the cop from the papers,” someone murmured. Cole Phelps’ rise from the beat to sharp suited detective was a current topic, one that Barb was enough acquainted with to be mildly surprised.
Even Golden Boy’s couldn’t escape menial errands, she supposed.
Those fat folders in her arms shifted over, the brunette took his hand for a shake, mouth affably twitching with a chuckle.
“Don’t worry, you’re in the right place.”
He smiled sheepishly at the brunette before nodding his head. “Ah, good. I would hate to find himself lost on the first few days on the job as a detective.” he said before carefully fixing the box of folders on her desk to make sure the box was secure and neatly place. “ It’s a pleasure to meet you, miss. I’m sure I will be working with you and R&I soon enough.” He said through another friendly enough smile. The desk clerks here seemed like amiable enough ladies. Perhaps more hard working than some of the boys at Central. “Well then, I shouldn’t be taking too much more of your time.”

His jaw clenched, his brows furrowed, a look that instantly brought out a killer instinct out of Cole. To say he was livid was not enough to truly describe the kinds of emotions Roy rose out of him. Earle was everything that Cole was not: his perfect foil. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Roy.” he said through gritted teeth and looked at him up and down. “I’m just doing my job. Fighting crime and taking care of the people of LA. Something that I think you’ve lost sight of a long time ago.”
There’s no HAPPY ENDINGS — not here and not now. This tale is all s o r r o w s and woes. You dream that JUSTICE and PEACE win the day…
But that’s not how the s t o r y goes.

“Oh...” he said as he fumbled with a dark green box that contained tons of supposed ‘files’ that he was told to bring down to R&I. He placed the box over onto her desk carefully before stepping away and tried not to look confused. The way she asked so incredulously put doubt on his mind - Cole swore it was a simply a courier task. “Well, the detectives over at traffic said I should make an appearance. I was told to drop this off with someone from R&I and introduced myself. I’m detective Cole Phelps in the Traffic division. I started this week so you may have to forgive me if I’m in the wrong neck of the woods.” he said courteously before removing his hat and offering his hand over to her.

He looked at Roy with a straight stare, trying to hide how he was fuming right under the surface. Or perhaps he wasn’t hiding it well. Roy, who cared so much for appearances, had a reciprocal effect on Phelps, who decided that keeping up facades was just another way of playing into the tiring game. A game that everyone - both the cops and the crooks - played.
“I don’t know, Roy.” he said sharply. It was clear he wasn’t satisfied with the conclusion of their most recent case, how he felt like there could have done more to help these people. “I thought we were supposed to be fighting crime. Clearly, I’m the one that doesn’t know what I’m doing.” He felt incompetent. Powerless to make things right. It was such an ugly feeling that gnawed at his stomach like the rest of his haunts.

Cole flipped through his notebook, mentally taking notes of what they just covered, looking between what he wrote down and what was reflected on the scene. The witness was already itching to leave. All evidence has been accounted for. He turned back to his partner and lightly shook his head. “No, I think that covers it.” he said before holding out the keys for Bekowsky to take from his hand. “Here, I think you know the way better. I’m still learning, after all.” Cole didn’t comment on it, but he could see how Stefan was basically gripping the edges of his seat while he was in the driver’s seat.

“I’m sorry, ma’am, but I’m afraid I don’t know who you are.” he said as politely as he could as he tried not to focus on the way she was dressed, how she was clearly a sight for sore eyes on the busy sunset drive street. “Do you happen to be confusing me for someone else?” He added, trying to see if there was a way he could at least help her, considering the strangeness of the timing of the question.
