I'm back, but sadly, only to tell you guys I'm leaving for good. I really just don't have the time to rp anymore, but it was so so so fun chatting with you guys. I wish all of you well!
Hey guys! I'm sorry about the loooong time away, but I've started a pretty intensive job that takes me away from the fun here. I don't think I'll be able to answer to any rp posts as of this summer, so i'm officially hiatus-ing myself. Sorry again for the weird no-response period! I'm flattered you guys even care about me.
"Well I would have been if I wasn’t inconvenienced earlier," Odette answered as she stood up. The heels of her shoes clicked slightly as she strode to the entrance. She wasn’t very agreeable. Part of her wanted to be that way, just to grate more on the detective’s nerves, but she knew he had been through a rough day. Her expression softened, along with her tone.
"And of course I was telling the truth. I’m not as wretched as you think I am." She gently placed her hand on his cheek, over the bruise. "Get some ice for that, dear." Withdrawing her hand, she then reached into her purse and pulled out a card. She softly placed it in his hand. Then she turned away with a smile, heading out of the cells.
Cole fought back a groan as Odette sassed him, but he'd be damned if he'd let this woman get any more on his nerves. So he stayed silent, nodding at her as she walked past. "Don't take it personally, miss. I've seen better people than you lie without qualms." He forced himself to stay still when he felt her hand on his cheek. It wasn't because the bruise was hurting him, no; it was the strange intimacy of the touch.
"Thanks," Cole replied, gruffly. He closed a fist around the card she placed in his hand, not quite crumpling it. Once she was out of view, he opened his hand again and flipped it over. It was her phone number. What the hell was he supposed to use that for? Sighing, he stuffed it into his back pocket, making a mental note to save it for later.
Back from the dead || Cole & Roy
"Don’t act so surprised," Roy scoffed, now leaning against Cole’s desk. Did he expect Vice to just lump him together with someone other than the senior detective? All history set aside, it was the only way.. and it couldn’t be denied that they made a damned good team.
"Save the formalities for someone who cares, Cole," he said, blatantly refusing to shake his extended hand. That sense of politeness had never worked on him. Roy, of all people, wasn’t fooling himself that this would be smooth sailing. A hell of a lot had happened in a week’s time… things that would take far more than a week to just get over. "Lucky for you, we start bright and early tomorrow…"
It figured that he’d missed the Caddy rather than his old partner… and Roy couldn’t stop a sardonic laugh from slipping past his lips at Cole’s sudden smile. Don’t hurt yourself there, partner. Might break something.
"… but if you think you’re getting your hands on the wheel any time soon, you’re hallucinating. This time, I drive.”
Roy was right, he shouldn't have expected anything else. After all, they did have a good run together, whether or not Cole wanted to admit it. He just hoped the renewed partnership wouldn't turn out like last time. It was stupid enough of him to angrily point a gun at Earle, and he didn't want to feel like he had to do it again.
When Roy refused the handshake, Cole sighed a bit and let his arm drop. He thought it would be good for them and signal that they would forget what happened in the past. Apparently, Roy didn't feel the same way. Cole slumped back down into his chair, suddenly feeling fatigued. Roy's snark usually had that effect on him. "Works for me. I thought I was going to go crazy just filing reports."
Cole laughed at Roy's familiar jab at his admittedly terrible driving skills. "I wouldn't want it any other way... partner."
Hearing that she would be in custody was actually a relief. Hector wouldn't have a chance at her while she was in a police station. Slowly, she got up from her seat and was taken into a police car. It was embarrassing, in broad daylight, everyone could see her. This would only serve to sour her reputation further. They thought she was a drug addict, a lush, and a slut. Well, that last part wasn't completely untrue.
Even so, she kept herself up, proudly striding to the car.
It was late. Sometime in the afternoon. Or was it night, when the familiar man opened the cell door? It was dark, only one bulb dispersed light to were she sat. She was cross-legged and smoking a cigarette. "I trust you weren't injured?" she said, but her tone contained no worry for his safety.
Cole led the woman to the car and gently led her into the back. "Thank you for the tip, Miss Odette. If you told the truth, Torres won't be on the streets when you get out of jail." Tipping his hat once again, he pushed the doors closed and nodded to the driver, watching the vehicle putter off and turn out of his sight.
The chase had been a hell of a time. Cole was covered in bruises and scratches from when he had to tackle and brawl with a flighty Torres. He'd almost pulled out his gun, but realized in time that shooting the suspect wouldn't get him any information. Instead, he delivered a brutal right hook to the man's jaw to put him down long enough to get him to central.
They'd gotten the answers they needed, and Cole was fairly confident he arrested the right man, so he went to the cells personally to release Odette. When she saw him her voice was nonchalant. "I thought you'd be happier to see the person who was about to get you out of here," Cole said with a smirk, meticulously working the lock. "You'll be glad to hear Torres was caught. Amazingly, you were telling the truth." With one last turn of his wrist, Cole flung open the cell door and gestured for the woman to step out.
Sorry about the delay, everyone! I was busy with things. Things that I shall not name. I'll get to replies now!
Odette rested back in her chair. She placed her gloved hand on the table.
"His business is in the..industrial part of town. Along Santa Fe Avenue," she answered. "And there is no matter of chance. I am telling the truth," she said with a piercing gaze. "Just don't let him know I was the one who told you. He's an impulsive man, detective." Hector had threatened her before about letting anyone know the location of the drug racket. He never thought of his actions, and she doubted he would give a second thought to killing her if he found out.
Finally the case was getting somewhere. Cole coughed into one of his fists and nodded to Odette, writing information down as quickly as he could. "I assure you, I won't let him know who gave me the location. He'll be too... tied up for that to even be a problem." Cole snapped his notebook closed suddenly and got up, not wanting to waste any time.
"We'll have you under custody while I take this lead, Odette. I hope you don't have any plans," Cole said standoffishly, but not unsympathetically. "It takes a while to get used to the uncomfortable chairs, but you'll be in much less fortunate circumstances if it turns out you've sent me on a wild goose chase." The detective gave Odette one last, hard stare and tipped his hat in her direction. "Thanks for the tip. If things go well you'll be back to work in no time." He then spun on his heel and power-walked out of the establishment, headed for Santa Fe Avenue.
Back from the dead || Cole & Roy
Perched at the edge of the desk, Roy watched Cole intently. He seemed tired, but he knew that deep down, this wasn’t what Cole wanted. He missed the thrill of the chase… gunfire and interrogations and actually making a name for himself, not getting papercuts and sipping moldy old coffee.
It was a risk, of course… to bring Cole anywhere near Hollywood. One that he and Colmyer had talked about for a long while before deciding that it was safe. In this case, the benefits of having Phelps on their side outweighed any possible consequences.
He had every right to expose them… but again, Cole also knew of the other big game players, and precisely the sort of people Roy was involved with. If he pushed, they’d just push right back… and he couldn’t really take any more hard hits to his already-soiled reputation. Just like everyone else, it seemed Cole had little choice but to be part of one of the many deals that was currently shaping LA.
His cocky smirk returning, Roy stood again, shaking his head in amusement.
"I knew you couldn’t say no," he said, in a self-assured way, but his tone quickly grew dark. ".. and just for the record, the feeling’s mutual, partner.”
Cole stiffened at Roy's last word. "I'll be working with you again?" He tried to keep the... not disappointment, really, Roy was reliable enough in the field, but maybe the pain, out of his voice. He coughed and got up, extending his hand. "It'll be... nice working with you again, Roy." It would be nice if all their differences could be resolved through a single handshake, but Cole doubted it would do anything for his own opinion towards his partner.
"So when do we start?" Cole cleared his throat, fidgeting with his newly bought suit - his favorite one had drowned with him a week ago and the others brought back bad memories. Working would take his mind off things, and God knew how much he'd been mulling over the terrible choices he'd made before he'd died. For the moment, however, he tried to think happy thoughts. It wasn't easy, especially with the one person he hated the most standing in front of him. But Cole had already promised himself he would get over the intense hatred - it just seemed like he had to tell himself the same thing over and over just to make it show on his face.
"To tell you the truth, I've missed the old Cadillac. I trust you haven't been reckless with it?" Cole took a deep breath and smiled. Strangely, it felt like the first real smile he'd made in years.
Back from the dead || Cole & Roy
It was obvious that Vice had gotten away with murder… with Cole’s affair taking center stage, and taking the heat off the squad for the Brenda scandal. Even after selling his partner out, Roy got away clean and easy by rubbing elbows with the right kind of people, and Cole knew it… but Phelps was a smart man. Egotistical as he was, he should know better than to mess around where he didn’t belong. It’d already killed him once.
Cliche as it was, sometimes that old saying rang true: "if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em." Brushing off Cole’s commentary as if it didn’t exist, Roy’s expression remained the same, save for a slight knitting of his brow. He sat at the corner of the desk, resting his weight there. It was true, he was lying… but not in the way Cole had probably expected. He’d been without a partner, too. So, instead of getting all mushy about it, Roy decided to cater to the other man’s ego. "Be a shame to waste all of your potential here doing chump work. You know you’re better than that, Cole."
Cole let a scoff escape him. "Yeah. You'd know." Oh, how he'd love to pull the rug out from underneath everyone who'd had a hand in the scandal - but he was determined to let bygones be bygones. "Listen, Roy," Cole sighed, rubbing a weary hand over his tired facial features. "I'd be lying if I said I wanted to work with you - or anyone - in vice again." He let himself go silent, trying to choose his next words carefully.
After a while, he couldn't think of any better alternative to working back at ad vice. He'd missed the field, even in the short time he'd been back, and he wanted to feel the rush he'd always gotten from chasing down a perp. "...Alright. I'll play your game, Roy. But don't think for a second this is for you or anyone else in this godforsaken place."
Odette raised a brow. Morphine syrettes? In her house? Someone must have been toying with her, and she didn't like it. Whoever it was, was determined to see her in jail.
The detective seemed so proud of himself. The fact that he thought he could just pin this off on her was almost amusing, and she found herself grinning as well. "Alright, detective. I know of someone involved with a drug ring, but I myself am not.." she answered, checking her nails. "Do you by chance know a fellow named Hector Torres? I can't help but be suspicious that he planted evidence in my house." Odette hoped that there was evidence of a break-in, for her sake. All the while, although she was worried that her frame would mean jail, she enjoyed playing with the detective. She thrived on the tension between them. It made everything more exciting.
Hector Torres? The name seemed to ring a bell, if only a very faint one. "No, I'm not familiar. Would you care to give me any information you might know?" Cole hoped his intuition had been right and that this Torres fellow was just a desperate out the snake-like woman was taking. He pulled out his pencil and began tapping it on his notebook absently.
There was a bit of evidence that pointed to a break-in, but Cole and the others had passed it off as Odette trying to get out in a hurry. If someone had done so, Cole owed the woman an apology. But he'd reserve judgement for now. "There's a chance you might be telling the truth, miss, and for your sake I hope you're not trying to fool me." Cole tipped his hat up and stared at Odette, trying to gauge her facial expressions. If there was one thing he was good at, it was telling if people were lying.
Back from the dead || Cole & Roy
If only Cole knew how much he’d haunted him since he was pronounced dead. Seemed only fair to return the favor…
Cheerful demeanor fading only somewhat, Roy retreated his hand in favor of standing in front of Cole’s desk, locking eyes with him. A few moments of silence passed, as Roy was always one for the dramatic, as he studied his ex-partner’s features. Cole might be smiling, but Roy could see right through his facade. He clearly wasn’t overly pleased to see him.
If word had got around like he assumed it had, he couldn’t really blame him.
"It’s not so much what I want… more like what Vice Squad wants…” Roy said, glancing off to the side before fixing him with an intense stare.
"So I guess I’ll just cut to the chase. We want you back, Cole."
Cole shifted in his seat as the silence seemed to stretch on for forever. He tried to keep a smile on his face, but it was feeling more and more forced as time wore on. He'd love to sock Roy right in the jaw, but he'd promised himself he'd move on. The whole scandal affair wasn't completely Roy's fault, and holding a grudge wouldn't solve or help anything.
"Really. After everything that's happened?" Cole couldn't keep the surprise out of his voice and only barely managed to school his facial features into something resembling a smirk. "You don't have to lie, Roy. You can just say the captain wanted me back and leave it at that. I'm not welcome there, not by a long shot." Cole lowered his head as he spoke, eyes blankly staring down at his paperwork. He might be overreacting, or making things up inside his head, sure, but if there was one thing he knew for sure, it was that Roy saw him as nothing but a stepping stone. Not as a partner, and definitely not as a friend.
Odette sighed. Had he not heard her answer? Placing her hands on the table, she leaned forward slightly.
"I already answered that," she said coldly, looking him straight in the eyes. "No. I am not involved with any drug ring." She slowly slid back into her seat, still maintaining intense eye contact with the detective. This man was almost irritating her. She didn't want her mood to be completely spoiled. "Now answer me this: What evidence brought you to me?"
"Forgive me if I have a hard time believing that." Cole matched her cold look with one of his own. Her vehement denial of any involvement in the drug ring wasn't surprising. The detective would just have to show her the right evidence and say the right things, and hopefully she'd break down like an old Chrysler. "I searched your house before this, Miss Odette. What I found wasn't pretty. You had piles of army surplus morphine syrettes just sitting out on the kitchen table." Confident he'd gotten the drop on her, Cole sat back a little and smirked at her from over his notebook.

Odette's mouth hung open slightly at the question. A drug ring? Did she hear that correctly? Odette was a lot of things, but a drug dealer was not one of them.
"..No," she answered, looking him right in the eyes. She almost felt insulted at such an accusation. "Darling, how did you come to that conclusion?" Resting her chin on her fist, she waited for an answer. She could almost feel Cole's anger. He was irritated by her, wasn't he? The fact almost made her grin. Odette was a woman who liked to play with fire.
Cole's face distorted into a mask of veiled contempt. "Cut the crap, Odette. There's no way you're getting out of this one." The fact that the suspect was looking at him with such a smug look only served to make his anger greater. "I want you to give me the truth. So let me ask you again: Are you or aren't you part of the massive drug ring hanging around these parts?" He wasn't a very violent man by nature, but he wouldn't hesitate to use force if the need arose.
The Ghost and the Snake
"My, my. Are you really here or is this an apparition?" Odette asked with a grin. They both sat in the currently closed Ghost Glass. She seemed a little too relaxed as she sat down across from the detective. Evidence pointed to her being involved with a drug ring. Certainly not a matter to take lightly, but she had not been told of her predicament. "Well then, ghost, send me your haunts." she said, referring to the questions.
"Let’s keep this short, Miss Odette. Are you are aren’t you involved with the drug ring?" The detective tapped his notebook, raising his gaze to meet the woman’s. He had this case, and he knew it. All he had to do was get the answers out of this mysterious woman and he’d be at the precinct before dawn to write up his report.
Everything about this woman rubbed Cole the wrong way. He was itching to just get done with this interrogation. He had the necessary evidence; he just hoped Odette would slip far enough for him to close the case.
