Printing in a Letterpress Studio on an Ostrander Seymour Washington Press
Since so many of you were curious about the project I was working on last week, I decided to make this little video about the process. Excuse the poor camera work... this was made entirely with my phone. Also, the print in the video didn’t stay mounted, but instead stuck to the type -- that’s not supposed to happen! My linocut block image was getting sticky and pulling the paper down from the clips. (Also -- there’s no music or talking in the video -- it’s just me trying to not look at the camera.) If there’s interest, I might be willing to do some instructional videos on printing and the early book trade.
Here are some additional photos from the project:
I am by no means an expert on printing (my inking technique is especially appalling!), but I adore our letterpress studio. It provides us a means of experiencing how early print worked and is a useful tool for teaching book history to students. I like to pair a day in the LPS with readings from Moxon’s “Mechanick Exercises”.
