A German Paratrooper (Fallschirmjager) armed with a MP-38 machine gun - Crete 1941
Shooting Positions with Pistol and Machine Pistol
This series of photographs show various shooting positions with both a pistol and a submachine gun. The photos are now part of the Cody Firearms Museum’s collection, and originally belonged to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.
The photographs show three shooting positions for the Luger P08 pistol, from a rest, from prone and standing as well as positions for firing the MP38 (distinguishable by the ridges in the receiver). The soldier can be seen firing the MP38 from the hip, shoulder and from the prone on a shooting platform. Given the illustrations of the various firing positions its likely these images were used for firearms training. It’s interesting to see what shooting stances German troops were being trained to use.
The soldiers appear to be wearing uniforms with Luftwaffe lapel and helmet insignia suggesting they may be members of the Luftwaffe Field Divisions. This would date the photographs to sometime after late 1942 when the Field Divisions were formed.
