Mother of the Dark Water

I loved this show, but I’m not sure how to describe it - which does it a disservice because it certainly deserves to be talked about and praised!  It was a sort of stream-of-consciousness nosedive into a beautiful, lyrical, intense, other-worldly place. 

The cast of female actors portrayed goddesses who reflected on the experiences and role models of African American women - carrying the audience into a flow of short stories, singing, dancing, chanting, tears, and laughter.  Each part of the performance led into the next, without pause or lull or marking of time.  I was never quite sure where it was going, or whether I was understanding everything I was supposed to, but two hours without intermission flew by and then I was on my feet clapping my heart out with the joy of what I’d seen.

This was the second show I’ve seen at Greenhouse Theater, and I’m really starting to love their work!  I’ll be back for another of their shows next week.
