Research Summary To begin with, before making "copy" project, I did some researches to find out which area attracts me most and stimulates me to try to develop it further. I've looked at different areas ,such as films, exhibitions, artists works, photographic and paintings. Due to the reason that I had no fresh feeling towards the works on painting and no irresistible curiosity of the works written by outstanding artists , I eventually chose "copy of painting", Diarmuid Kelley', Kate Pugsley and Otto Dix .These three were my favourite artist's paintings. After discussing with my student tutor and considering the implementation of works, I decided to utilize the painting the Otto Dix's Portrait of the Journalist Sylvia von Harden. Firstly, I considered the use of lighting, rough statistics the amount that light and soft box being used and placed in order to create the similar photos effect as the painting; Then ,I prepared for models, clothing and props according to characters clothing design in paintings, but the table and stool appeared in pictures are difficult to prepare, especially for the retro chair, so I lastly decided to use tray to paint out a shape and cut it out and paste it on the stool, which fortunately gave birth to good effect. The high gloss and shadow of paintings were a little beyond reality, in order to make the effect optimal, post processing is a very important part. I brightened up the character's hands and face and increase the strong pink and purple color of background, combining with original paintings and figures, which created a more exaggerate and strong visual effects. The characters in Otto Dix's picture is a 30s century Lady with exaggerate costumes and makeup, who wears dark red lipstick with a cigarette and short hair with stockings. I associated her with "vintage woman fashion" in my brain, so I treated this element as the start point, I began to do research on the series, in order to maintain image consistency with "copy", I mainly kept the two main points, one was the strong color and atmosphere and the other was vintage woman fashion style . I read some magazines and newspapers about the history Of 30thand 20th century on women's fashion and clothing, and Saul Leiter fashion photography work "SoamesBantry, Nova" and the "Taxi" at The Photographers' Gallery, he used the spacers indirectly to shoot people, Cleverly using the article under situation for rendering transitions, which was unique and has its own signature style that gave me great inspiration. Ladies with vintage style of fashion inevitably made people think of short curls or disc sent, on one hand, if added very gorgeous of lip color and clothing, people would easily think of Mary Lotus Dream Dew, on the other hand, the unified-times fashion photography style of each national was very different. Personally, the maximum difference of women between Asia and Europ was that Oriental women were partially restrained conservative, but European women were more bold both on clothing styling and daily words. So in order to explain the difference, I used different lighting and composition to change the way I shoot models, thus showing different results. When I began to raise the most important part of "clothing" and distribution ornaments, I altogether aggregated five sets of retro clothes, some other distribution ornaments, and decorations. And I respectively took photos three times in Studio. At first time, due to no connection success of flash and camera ,I failed, leading to picture full black. But I also draw experience from it and learn how to set and use Studio in facilities, in the next two times of shooting, I chose only a soft box and light to shooting. After changing in lighting ,composition and colour for many times, theme became richer and clearer. The last two times of shooting ,I used two different color of Jell with overlap match to create is strong color atmosphere and Visual impact, but using only one kind of Jell easily produce problems of obtaining single color and changing clothing original color, to avoid it ,I used two species different color of Jell from different angle to cover light of upper and lower position to makes Jell could not directly strongly play on models body. I adjusted the distance between light and models, and attempted to photograph models from different angle: up, down, horizon. In addition to shooting in the Studio, printing film is the most time and energy consuming step process in the color darkroom, in order to achieve their desired effect, I compared copy with series, try to make them fit with each other, and found out the links between them, tried to use different ways to highlight and magnified it. My work series fits into portraiture, which describes the ladies wearing styles in different countries, in the process of making the copy project. I realized I had confidence to make arrangements for scene and to capture important moments, but I was not skilled enough in post processing for pictures. In the progress of project series, I realized I have precise goal of desired effect in my heart, and I would use different methods to approach to the effect I wanted whether in the progress of filming nor in the last progress of process, but I knew little about the use of equipment in the Studio, which made me come across a lot of errors affecting the final result. I needed constant practice, not only not for the filming, but also for the use of studio equipment .
