HOTROCITY is here.
Week 16
A few weeks ago my name got passed along to John Mark, the man behind Hotrocity and MPLSTYLE, and he came to me asking if I would be willing to shoot a launch video for his new fashion e-commerce brand. As he was demonstrating his vision, showing me the clothes, and explaining the brand imprint all I could think about was how over my head it all was. So I agreed. I’ve reached a point where doing what seems intimidating and putting myself out of my comfort zone is the easiest way to find the same high I got when I first started shooting.
I found that the pace and collaboration of working with talent and fashion was really appealing to me, and I hope to do lots more of it. That desire was where Week 14, Graveyard Girl, was born from. The crew on this shoot was outstanding, I can’t say enough how much of a pleasure it was to work with John Mark, Irv Briscoe, Matt Blizel, the dancers, and the assistants. Julia from Ignite was fantastic, I think her talent is beyond obvious in the video.
I hope you enjoy it!
According to the calender, spring should already be here, but this is Minnesota after all. Get in a springy mood by going to national designer RubyBritt’s trunk show at local boutique Drama, see the newly renovated Lula shop, get entertained at GenX or stop by American Apparel on Saturday for a personal shopping experience.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27 RubyBritt Trunk Show
@ Drama 4946 France Ave Edina
Who doesn’t love to dress like a celebrity now and again? Well local boutique Drama is teaming up with Dallas-based (and Minnesota-born) designer Chelsea Stumo, whose brand RubyBritt has made a splash in Hollywood. Catch Stumo’s designs for Spring/Summer 2013 and the designer herself will also be on hand with her collection based on the three Fs: fit, function, and fabrication.

Our favorite emerging designer of the year is Caroline Hayden. While she is new to the scene, her design aesthetic shows a wealth of knowledge and expertise that makes Hayden a force to be reckoned with. The refined elegance and simplicity of Hayden’s AW13 collection was breathe taking at MNFashion’s The Shows last month. We’ll be thrilled so see more at the GenX benefit show on March 29 and 30 at the Lab Theater. Here’s a quick Q&A MPLSTYLE had with the designer herself. Originally published at MPLSTYLE.com.
MPLSTYLE: What was your first exposure to the fashion industry?
Hayden: After graduating from UW-Stout with an Apparel Design degree in 2003 and interning in New York, I spent the next eight years designing custom gowns. Two years ago, Hollie Mae Schultz of HM Styling contacted me about using some of my gowns for a holiday shoot and then introduced me to the Minnesota fashion community. My first showing was at the Spring 2012 Emerging Designers Showcase sponsored by MNfashion and l’étoile magazine.
MPLSTYLE: What inspires you the most as a designer?
Hayden: I love fabric. Finding inspiration from a print, texture, or draping idea is usually where my design process begins.
