Mai's heart raced as she frantically searched her apartment, turning it upside down in her desperate quest to find Cactus. The controlled chaos that's usually the aesthetic of Mai's apartment had turned into actual chaos.
"Cactus! Cactus, where are you?" she called out, her voice trembling with worry. She felt bloomin' stupid she had left the door open for just a moment. He might've gotten out in that brief lapse. But since nothing was certain she quickly closed the door and started her search in the apartment itself, in case Cactus hadn't escaped.
Tears welled up in the Celt's eyes as she imagined her little hedgehog alone and scared in an unfamiliar place. She knew how much he depended on her for care and comfort, and the guilt gnawed at her.
Mai checked every nook and cranny of her apartment, lifting cushions, peering under furniture, and even checking her closet. She called out his name over and over, hoping for a telltale rustling of quills or a faint squeak in response.
Time seemed to stretch as she continued her frantic search, her heart sinking with each passing minute. She couldn't bear the thought of losing Cactus, the one constant source of joy and comfort in her life.
After the young woman was sure her beloved quilled companion had left her apartment, she made her way through the halls of the building, calling his name over and over. At this point she didn't care it was getting late. She needed to find him.
Oh gosh, I'm such a bad mom...
"Cactus! Cactus, please," she hiccuped, crying and on the verge of hyperventilation. "I know you miss France, but this is our life now! Cactus, please come back!"
She made her way through every story of the building until she got to the lobby. There was where she finally let all of it out. Tears streaming down her rosy cheeks.
What if I've lost him for real this time?
