Which was an interesting experience. After waiting in line for the longest time I finally get called up to a desk where this young man is sitting. I tell him I want to register back into the country (since I've lived here before) and hand over my old social security card. This blew the guys fucking mind, since apparently my old card is like a relic of some sort and belongs in a fucking museum. We have a laugh and he goes to find the papers I need to fill out. He walks me through it and then asks for my passport so he can make a copy. Before he scuffles off I politely ask him if I can register on another name. At this his sweet demeanour changes and he studies me all suspicious like before telling me that I can't. Okay, no problem my man I was just checking. "Why do you wanna register under another name?" he then asks not trying to hide his sudden hostility. "Because I'm trans" I simply tell him. Now this dude, my pal, gets all flustered. He apologizes for his rudeness. I'm not mad at him, I understand his suspicion, he's just trying to do his job, and moving to another country and changing your name is suspicious af. He then leaves me to fill out the papers and goes to make a copy of my passport. When he returns (after an unusual long time) he pulls up a screen and opens up their website. This awesome fellow actually went out of his way to hunt down one of his colleagues while he was in the back to ask about how trans people went on about changing their names. He tells me about this recent law that allows trans people to register under another name and social security number and shows me where I can find this on their website and how to go about it. I was on the verge of tears!! This dude did not have to do this, but he did it either way. I'd like to emphasize that I did not ask for this, I just told him I was trans and he found this information for me on his own accord. I was absolutely blown away!! I was fully prepared to go through so much trouble to find this information myself and this dude, my guy, Mr. Awesome, just handed it to me on a silver platter. And that is not even the end of his awesomeness. I had other stuff I needed to apply for while I was there and this dude (again on his own accord) asked me what else I needed and bumped me to the front of every line so I didn't have to spend all day waiting in line. Seriously man, I cannot thank you enough for everything you did for me today. I appreciate everything you did for me and especially how you went out of your way to help me. You made my day!!
