Collected thoughts on both, because I'm quite honestly in love with these this month. Both pieces had this electric pull of references and concepts that just drew me in and transfixed me. For one thing, I can really relate to the positions of Marian and Cameron as proto-divinities just because they're so involved in the things that I once wanted to be involved in (or was involved in.), namely WH and V:tM, and general RP style pursuits. The fact that their relationship is so subtly and then openly antagonistic is also so very real, even as they transcend mortality and become something so very -other-. That way that love doesn't instantly become hate, but becomes another broken flavour of love. By the end, they're still committed to each other in their ways, still defined by their bond. In some ways, the same is true for Laura and Lloyd. The realisation that they come to is that they're so similar that it drives a wedge between them, almost to the point where they hate each other on principle rather than for solid reasons. Old grudges and grievances start to frame the game they play with each other, as they move through and towards discovery. Also, Lloyd's line about how "I don't want to join my betters. I want to better them." Is so fantastically resonant for anyone who's ever aspired to a group or felt obliged to fall in with a clique and then eventually realised that- beyond a certain point and outside a certain framework- no one will care, and their judgement shouldn't define you.
