funny animal thing: my sister’s golden retriever (his name is duck and he just turned one) regularly falls down the stairs because when he gets excited he forgets he has legs also he looks like this
OH MY GOD, I LOVE HIM!!! Clumsy baby!!! Animals who are unaware of their own anatomy >>>>>>>. Also, he has the very best name of any golden retriever ever! So very fitting for a a fluffy yellow baby. Please give Duck many, many pats on my behalf!
I love goldens so much. They're literally fluffy rays of sunshine, and I have never met one who was not an absolute angel. (and I've met several.)
In exchange, I have a story about a clumsy horse.
Under the cut, because brief mention of past animal neglect! (Don't worry, he's being well taken care of now, and the story in question is not sad at all!)
So, at the barn where I took riding lessons (I only stopped because of uni.), there is a horse named Taco Tuesday. He's only 3, and is very sweet.
His previous owner had him in a pasture that was much, much too small for him, and it was frequently very muddy. Because of this, Tuesday would avoid moving around a lot.
Because he grew up in that space, he never really had a chance to figure out how his (now much larger) body works. He's physically healthy, and now has a very, very large pasture to run around in. However, he doesn't know how to carry his own weight, nor does he know how big he actually is.
So, his gait is very, very wonky (it's not harmful to him at all, but it needs to be worked on before someone can ride him.), and he's a bit clumsy.
One day, I was at the barn, and all the horses got called into the smaller pasture where they wait to get brought into the barn for dinner. (Easier to catch horses in a pasture that's not the size of a mall.) Horses are, in general, food motivated, so they always come RUNNING when the gate gets opened.
Tuesday is no exception. So, he was galloping along, with his goofy little gait, and just so happened to run under a tree. Because he doesn't know how tall he is, he hit his head on a branch. Rather than stop, he just kept running, but did an excellent impression of conveying the "fuck, where did that come from?", despite being a horse.
He absolutely has not idea how big he is, but he is very sweet and will make an excellent riding horse once he figures out his gait and can start to be ridden! As it is, he already behaves wonderfully with a halter, being in cross ties, etc.
blorbo blursday: looking through your intro post i already am obsessed with raven so tell me more about him! or maybe his relationship with princess sapphire?
Lucky for you, you're gonna get an infodump on both because I have Raven and Sapphire brainrot so bad.
I'll start with Raven then move into his and Sapphire's relationship :D. Under the cut because. there. is. a. lot.
Raven
He is the princess's personal bodyguard. Her dad and stepmother are so protective of Sapphire, they decided she needed one, despite not letting her leave the heavily guarded castle (Sapphire sneaks out all the time anyway). If Sapphire gets hurt on Raven's watch- which is all the time- the king and queen will literally have his head.
Raven is about 19 to 20 years old in the first book he appears in- my sleeping beauty retelling *that I'm trying to name*. He joined the king's army as a trainee with a bunch of other 14 year old squires, and has been Princess Sapphire's bodyguard ever since he was about 16.
Raven is very morally gray, very likely a chaotic good on the alignment chart. He will do what ever he thinks is right or do everything possible to protect the people he cares about, not caring a bit for the rules. He will keep the people he loves safe, even if he has to kill or burn down the whole world- and he would do so without hesitation or remorse.
He is also the middle child in a huge family. He has four big brothers, all in the king's army like him (three of them are captains, and one is a sergeant), and he has three little sisters at home. His parents are both alive and well, and they own the only inn/tavern in his small hometown. He likes to braid his sisters' hair, read them bedtime stories, play knights and princesses with them, all of it. He looks up to all of his brothers, and sees them as warriors and badass knights.
He's bisexual, and dated around a little bit in the army before falling for the princess, but only one of those relationships went beyond the first few dates (and it did not end well).
He also has a best friend in the knight's guard, his brother in arms Harry. He lightly teases Raven about his crush on the princess, and is Raven's biggest hype-man and the best wingman.
Raven is also Latino mixed! Here's his Artbreeder:
(his hair should be longer than that, long enough to put into a little ponytail but it's fine)
And (because I project a lot) Raven is also autistic! Because he's in the army, and bc of just society in general, he has developed a habit of masking all of the time- to the point that it takes a toll on his physical health as well as mental. But a few of his new friends (and Sapphire ;)) help him feel comfortable in starting to unmask, especially around them. His main traits are sensory issues, having a hard time with auditory processing, hyperfixation (mostly on his job), and he has a hard time saying things verbally in general (talking takes a lot of energy).
Raven and Sapphire
Now onto his relationship with our favorite hyperactive princess:
A little bit on Sapphire- she's an impulsive, headstrong princess. Because of her parents, she sneaks out of the castle frequently in a desperate need to prove that her parents are worrying for nothing. She also thinks she's invincible. And she's a redhead. And she has ADHD (because she was raised in the castle, she was allowed a little bit more room to unmask, so she doesn't do it a lot)
Raven and Sapphire are basically a combination of some of my favorite ship dynamics: common sense x chaos bringer, grumpy who actually a really sweet ray of sunshine they just refuse to accept it *or mask too much* x sunshine, the autistic one x the adhd one (can you tell I'm projecting :P), protective x equally badass, battle/power couple *that's healthy*, and the bodyguard x the protectee.
They also help each other learn to overcome their fatal flaws! Raven is overly cautious and doesn't like vulnerability. Meanwhile Sapphire is hyper-independent, and has no caution or self preservation at all.
These two flaws both lead to Sapphire falling under the sleeping curse, which in turn leads them both to realize they might want to take a page out of each other's books when it comes to a lack of caution or being overly cautious. And they do! They work together and find a balance, not only for themselves, but also their relationship.
At first, there's a lot of mutual pining because their love is forbidden (Sapphire's parents would freak), so there's a lot of both of them being a little touch starved. After Raven rescues her/she escapes the underworld, they are very affectionate, and almost always making physical contact. They're the couple that does not mind PDA in the slightest, no matter who is around. So many cuddles, so much hand holding, so many forehead and cheek kisses, so much leaning their head on the other, so much hugging from behind- I could go on forever.
At first glance, Raven seems to be the most protective, but as he and the readers will quickly find out after the underworld, she is equally as protective of him.
Anyways, that's my infodump on Raven and Sapphire. (I project onto them a lot with my Autism and ADHD which is probably why I'm so obsessed with them lol) Or at least everything I can think of right now hehe.
Thanks for the ask @mr-writes and Happy Blurbo Blursday!
STS (storyteller saturday) is when you send and receive asks from other writers about anything pertaining to your stories (at least that’s how i understand it)
so going off of that: is there other media (songs movies/shows, books) that inspired your wip?
@mr-writes
i love that!! i'm about to send a bundle out and anybody who reads this i suggest you do the same to others!
the wip i'll be discussing is twisted stitches.
the melody of detective by no doubt has the creepy feel of what i'm going for, but my whole twisted stitches playlist (a huge wip in itself — i'll be working on this today as well) is linked here!
stitches himself, appearance-wise, reminds me a little of ryuk from death note because of that creepy smile and just how large he is.
the movie hereditary, specifically when alex wolff's character, peter graham, looks at his reflection and sees a smile on his face when he isn't actually smiling totally creeped me out and also inspired the whole creepy smile aspect.
finally, the scene in donnie darko where donnie tries to touch frank (his "imaginary friend") and hits a weird portal wall thing was super inspiring to me. donnie darko the film in general actually i think was the main inspiration for twisted stitches.
thanks for the explanation of sts and the question!!
the abyssal wealds sounds so incredibly cool. if you couldn’t tell, i’m a sucker for a creepy forest.
if it’s not too much to ask, would you be willing to share your process for creating your fantasy words because they are so creative
Ahhhhh thank you so much!!!! I love creepy forests and knew one HAD to go in my story! And I love, love, love the Alderwood in your story, so yaaay!!!! Creepy forest besties!!!
As far as my creative process for fantasy words, I like using words that “sound” like what they are. I adore reading fantasy, but sometimes I have a hard time figuring out who’s who when unique names and words show up frequently and sound almost a little too fantastical, if that makes sense? I almost always end up loving books that have glossaries, but starting out my gut reaction is sometimes “Oh no, I have to study vocab.” As a beginning author, I don’t want to push new readers that much just yet!
I love it when fantasy words so unique and evocative, while still remaining fairly comprehensible on a first readthrough.
In the post about the abyssal wealds, obviously ABYSSAL WEALDS sounds spooky and scary and is just an adjective (inspired by the abyssal zone in the ocean since that’s the vibe I want the wealds to have) and a noun (weald just being an old timey name for forests. I actually learned to associate creepy woods with the word “weald” from the video game Darkest Dungeon).
Alpengeits, for the big goat monsters is a portmanteau of alpine and geit (the Icelandic world for “goat”). Once readers learn what alpengeits are, I’m hoping that on a linguistic level it’s an easy word to associate with big, adorable monster mountain goats!
Stallnyan is a placeholder name and I keep going back and forth between thinking it’s cute and clever or kind of distracting and stupid. Correlaine is somewhat inspired by northern Japan, specifically the Hokkaido region, so the “nyan” (combined with “stallion”) would be a reference to the Japanese word for a cat meowing.
That was a long ramble, so I guess I can summarize by saying I do my best to make fantasy words sound both unique and familiar (and approachable)! My favorite fantasy words are the ones that sound unique while at the same time feeling very real and established.
STS: which of your characters do you think are going to be fan favorites? which would surprise you if they became a fan favorite?
Happy STS and thank you for the ask, @mr-writes !
That's a good question. I think Raven is definitely going to be a 'book boyfriend' that a lot of fangirls will swoon over, because he's that 'protective morally gray male love interest but also really sweet and affectionate' type that I see is very popular with female readers. For the gays, Erica would probably be a book girlfriend a lot of fangirls also swoon over, because she seems to be the type of girl popular with girls who like girls (flirtatious, romantic, thicc, etc). I'm really just guessing based on what I've seen in other fandoms here, as I am aroace and don't really see it from my personal experience lol.
Honestly, I can see the whole cast being relatively popular with the fans, so I don't know who I would be surprised to see being the most popular. They all have traits and qualities that would make them very likable and popluar with fans.
