"Do you do this all on your own?"
After the queen had left, the Hatter gave him some tools and a tour around the gardens. It is huge. And so far, the only other gardener he's seen is the Hatter. "Alone? Never alone. The cat helps, too." Not sure what he's saying, he tries again, "The cat?" The Hatter laughs, snorting at the end, "Cheshire. Oh, you will meet them, when they feel like it. Yes, mostly myself, and new gardeners." As they settle to water the plants, he decides this would be the best chance to ask about it. "What exactly happened to the others? Has there been many?"
A caterpillar lands on his shoulder, moving his little antlers and staring into his eyes. Almost like it's trying to say something. "They come and go, whoever knows. The queen? Of course, but I can't be sure." He seems melancholy when speaking of it. The happy face he just had gone missing, and replaced with a longing one. He snaps out of it quickly though, and starts to whistle a happy tune.
"Is everyone mad in this place?" He was never supposed to say it out loud. He almost panics when he realizes, he just did. But the Hatter just starts to laugh, "We're all mad here. I'm mad, you're mad." He never thought himself the mad kind. In fact, sometimes he feels like he's to only sane person around. That reminds him what the Queen said about the former gardener...he was too sane. "How do you know I'm mad?"
The Hatter stops whistling the tune and turns to face him. "You must be, or you wouldn't have come here."
