The song “Pepper” by the Butthole Surfers came on the radio as I was driving home from the store just now...
.... And I will now connect that song to today’s historical date in a sort of Six Degrees kind of way.
The song is basically about dying. Or people that are fascinated by death. The lead singer of the Butthole Surfers is a man named Gibby Haynes, who grew up here in Dallas. He is the son of the late, great Jerry Haynes; best known to many of us as children’s show host Mr. Peppermint, which began filming here in Dallas back in 1961. Due to a freak twist of fate during a lunch break, he became the first person to report about the Kennedy Assassination on the news just moments after it happened on November 22, 1963.
Which, the events of that day, we get to keep hearing about on the local news here in Dallas all day today.
So if you want some very weird way to observe this historic date, go ahead and listen to the song “Pepper” today. I don’t know, at least it may entertain you for a few minutes.
