Silkwings! (OLD)

Ok so it’s been a second since I last posted a redesign… I have a like three others in line atm because I work faster than I can think lmao

Ok so… moth. Yeah. Let me explain!!!! Butterflies don’t make silk! Silk moths do!!!!!! So I’ve decided they are super fluffy and cute now (: BUT I’ve also thought about higher class silkwings (the ones in the fancy hives) don’t have fur and are more butterfly like (or in this case being closer to the canon silkwings.)

I’ve decided to add a bunch of beetle wing features to them as well since in my au they are direct descendants of beetlewings (I’m pretty sure this is canon but I’ve heard otherwise so whatever.) So things like pincers and a beetle horn make sense in my opinion. They also have super hard shells, and some extra arms! These arms along with their front talons can create silk.

Also their fur glows if they are flamesilk. I think that’s cute.

They still work pretty similar to the canon silkwings. They’re already one of my favorite tribes so I don’t have many gripes!

Beetlewings! (OLD)

I finally colored this… just in time for pride month… my favorite lesbian…

I have kind of a basic beetlewing design but I put my whole self into it so you HAVE to like it.

Firstly… wow look beetle shell!!! I’ve seen lots of beetle designs but none of them have enough armor in my opinion so she has it EVERYWHERE. I have her beetle horns and a cool tail barb thing. Beetles don’t have that but I thought it looked cool paired with her horns. Also pincers.

Beetlewings are actually one of the biggest tribes in my au. They are strong, agile, and good fighters. Their tails obviously have paralyzing abilities like hive wings (I think they have those???) and she has 4 wings!

I tried to give her casing for her wings but it always looked clunky so i used a real beetles wing as a reference for the shape.

Since in my au they live in a cave system they have glowy spots like lightning bugs! They’re also VERY chrome and shiny. My girl here is name glaphyridae which is a real type of beetle! Awesome. Also four eyes.

Seawings! (OLD)

Obsessed with this design actually. Might be one of my best

I imagine they are much chubbier now! They’re bodies are blubbery kind of like leopard seals (which I took lots of inspo from in the face. I even wanted them to have the same kinda tail but I retconned that)

They’re tadpole like tails look much more swimmable in my humble opinion. Their old tails weren’t chubby enough for me so I need them to BE FATTER!!! Also they have little frills on their faces! (I kinda stole this from rainwings but they have much cooler frills now)

I decided to keep their weird shin lights. Idk why. They looked cool and seem kinda like thick armor skin?

They have very small (although not that small) wings which makes it hard for them to fly. I based these LOOSELY after the look of flying fish’s wings.

Skywings! (OLD)

So… skywings… they’re actually one of my favorite tribes so far. I love birds… a lot. So yeah they have bird wings and feathers now! I see a lot of people make rainwings into birds but I see them more as snakes or jungle cats (:

They’re extremely athletic in most fronts, minus swimming of course and they often have flying competitions! I honestly didn’t change much about them in general. They already had a pretty decent design for my liking, being a very basic dragon. lol.

They have that black natural eyeliner that cheetahs have so they can see when flying super high because of the sun. I’m actually not sure if that’s how that works but you know… I’m trying my best. Plus a birdie beak!

They’ve very similar to velociraptors in terms of looks. I thought of adding some arm feathers but it seemed like too much at the time… now that I’m looking at it she looks a little top heavy with the color and feathers… imagine they have arm feathers.. lol…

Leafwings! (OLD)

Wow look it’s sundew! The best lesbian ever! I’m not the proudest of this drawing but it gets the job done…

Leafwings are strange to me with the whole sapwing/poisonwing thing imo… so in my au they are two different species! For the most part. I will prob draw willow for saplings later on. Ok so let’s get into poisonwings.

Poisonwings are way more agile than sapwings, being skinny and often having sharper features. My sundew drawing doesn’t really embody that but I made it that way because she grew up going to the sapwing settlement a bunch for willow.

Leafwings now have cool leaf… wings… and frills and cool branch horns! They also have little leaves on them too (: they also have venemous claws! Hence the name poisonwings! They developed this over the years because they needed a better way to capture animals to eat. Running around and flying in a very dangerous jungle where giant dragon eating plants isn’t very fun when you’re chasing a little squirrel.

They also have very good night vision and hearing. They can hear even the tiniest of blinds moving and creeping… gotta stay alert.

Mudwings! (OLD)

Wow look my mudwing design! I decided to color it for you guys or whatever… not like I care about your opinions or anything… /silly

So I have a few notes surrounding the drawing of course. Can’t be a drawing by me without endlessly rambles. I will expand further ☝️

In my wings of fire universe (I have a whole mindscape.,) mudwings are very loosely related to seawings! Since it’s mentioned they have super good breath-holding abilities it always just seeed right. They have big flappy tails and webbed toes that look like alligators. Actually, they look like alligators in a lot of ways now.

I also decided to give them ram horns and tusks (wow so original I KNOW.) I think it looks good. I normally try and make the dragons a little more… biologically accurate but you know. They’re dragons. THEY ARENT REAL. So there’s only a handful of things to make them more accurate.

I also decided to bring in The bioluminescence from those distant drawing cousins on the little dots. They glow like lighting bugs (: I don’t think about them being able to control the dots well, just gentle blinking so there isn’t any… SECRET LANGUAGE OF THE MUDWINGS WOAHHHH!!!!!!

I don’t have many changes culturally for the mudwings. I do think they are a little underwhelming in the series at som points but maybe that’ll change once I read book 16!

I always imagine that they don’t care about appearance very much unlike some of the other tribes but I do think they’d value horns. The bigger and or longer the horns are the more “beautiful” you are. Small stubby horns look juvenile and underdeveloped.

I can’t think of anything else to say but yeah… drops my weirdly clay shaped goober and leaves..

Icewings! (OLD)

Okay so this is a big one. They look very different.

I know Icewings with fur and antlers sooo original but i HAVE A REAL REASON! In my AU I've decided that instead of Icewings looking all reptile-ey they look more like caribou because caribou LIVE IN THE ARCTIC TUNDRA! I even based Snowfalls horns off of caribou horns. with that i made all of their spikes more rounded so instead of them being "spiky" they are used more for bludgeoning and things of the like. imagine being slapped super hard with a that tail. sure you might not be IMPALED but you will break a few ribs.

I've also given them more caribou (or other animals similar to that. deer reindeer yk) like faces. I originally intended for them to look like wolves but they ended up NOT being like that at all so that's FINE. She also has pretty fur details. I'M A SUCKER FOR FLUFFY DRAGONS OKAY.

she's also a thicker dragon! I maybe should have made her thicker because they live in the cold and they need that body mass but whatEVER. Also side note: I like to think that royal Icewings would have bigger/thicker horns than common Icewings.

Rainwings! (OLD)

Anyway here’s my guy. If you’re awesome and cool you’d notice that she looks a lot like the German cover of the third wings of fire book! Very awesome. I decided to get rid of her horns and make her claws retractable since it would look weird if they were invisible idk how to explain.

They are also much longer now. Like snakes. And also like kitty. I kinda combined the look of a jungle cat with some snake influences because… reptile. I wanted to draw the tail much longer but my tiny baby sketchbook can only hold so much without it looking like a weird pencil mark blob.

(Her fangs are also retractable )

I think that it would be cool if she used her little wing fingers to grab onto the sides of trees. Obviously the wings would be bigger but I size them down to save space. I also gave them extra back toes to aid in grabbing trees.

They can have ANY pattern on their bodies. Flower patterns are very very common. I like to think they have a more… skin-like quality to their bodies and so things like tattoos would be common if you don’t have a cool pattern in the first place. The more patterns you have the prettier you are.
