I’m continuing to work through Michael T Gilbert’s Mr Monster series. With this issue, I’m finally moving beyond the issues in my frequently-reread Marlowe & Co collection, so these stories aren’t as familiar to me as the previous ones. Four issues in, Mr Monster takes us into another dimension thanks to the fantastic art of Jeff Bonivert, who also does the cover. And the classic reprints gave me my first look at Dr Drew by Jerry Grandinetti, which stuck with me to this day; I even have a book collecting all those stories. The second issue of Mr Monster is the one that won me over completely. The story is full of action, horror, humor and heart, and Michael T Gilbert and William Messner-Loebs are a much smoother combination on art (and they were really good in the previous issue as well).
