He slipped  out  his  phone  and  opened the grainy security camera  footage of  her fighting and event- ually slaying of a rogue agent.      “Sloppy work not checking for cameras, Claire.”

“Goddamn, Helena, stop--!” Numbers snapped, swatting at the woman in his passenger seat. She had already grounded crumbs into the very fibers of his flooring, effectively ruining it, and now it seemed she wanted to do the same to his center console. By the time he caught her, half its fabric was torn off. He slapped at her hand again. “Stop picking at it, you fucking psychopath!”

“Listen to me, you piece of shit burnout.” Numbers willed his tone calm, but each word was spat so slowly and so deliberately that his anger was, nevertheless, perfectly discernible. Understandably, though. He did just have to transport and dispose of a corpse across state lines, all while six-fucking-pounds of kush sat in the trunk. He should have known better than to let Stillo anywhere near his shit.

“If you leave your drugs in my car again, I will shoot you in the back of the head. I will seriously shoot you, Frankie, alright? I'm not having the police search my car for pot and finding a dead fucking body.”

Numbers gritted his teeth.          Her voice really was like nails against a chalkboard and he had to resist the urge to tell her so.    He’s felt mace before and was not about to try it again.

“I just want to ask you a few questions.   That’s all.  Put the mace down.” Then, for good measure: “Please.”

“I was under  the  impression  that  we had come to an agreement,  Ms. Johnson.”     Numbers had welcomed himself in and began speaking without invitation.    He was never a man to shy away from high risk situations, but confronting  the  Secretary  of  Homeland Security was ballsy even for him.    Frustration was making him bolder.       “You keep your dogs off our heels and the syndicate keeps off yours.   But, yesterday, I got word that three of my guys have been arrested.        Under investigation by homeland security.”

Numbers drew  closer  and  placed  his  hands on his hips. His jacket was pulled back and gun revealed.  It was best she knew he was serious.    “So?  Explain to me,   Tamsin,   what part of ‘leave my men be’ did you misinterpret?”
