Anxiety tightened beneath his rib cage, funny how after all these years Neal still could not face the fear of being known - of laying himself bare and praying that the other wouldn’t turn away. But it was Emma, and Neal couldn’t quite let go of that memory that he had once felt safe with her. That Neal had almost found a home with her, and that memory gentle as a guiding hand unclenched that hold in him slowly but surely. His shoulders slumped, lips parted to release a breath of air that he had not been conscious of holding. She wasn’t asking for much, really she wasn’t, and Neal owed it to her if not more after how horrendously her life had been uprooted because of him.
Hazel eyes glanced away from Emma’s green as Neal scratched at the back of his neck. “Okay,” He still wouldn’t meet her gaze, suddenly taken with the immensity of the open water just beyond Storybrooke’s beach. “What do you want to know?”
