Alex roughly shoved Michael to the floor behind the couch just as bullets began to tear through the wall. He wasn't counting on Michael pulling him down with him. 

"Guerin, I can't return fire from the floor!" he hissed.

"You also can't return fire if you're full of holes," he said, far too reasonably..

Michael's been getting escalating death threats for months now, and it's up to Alex to keep him safe, so long as he can focus on the job and not Michael's face. . . .

comment: who doesn’t love a bodyguard au? not me, that’s for sure!!! i was addicted from the first chapter, in part because of the trope and how brilliantly it’s set up, but also because sismyn’s dialogue is a thing of wonders. i could honestly just read 10k of michael and alex’s banter. the slow burn of their relationship while they’re in the safehouse is delicious and i can’t wait to see how the fic ends. check out the whole series if you have time; there’s two prequel fics which, again, have some fantastic dialogue.

The first time Michael lied about his hand, it was still bleeding, and the pain of what had happened didn't matter compared to the way Isobel was looking at them as they manhandled corpses.

The first time he lied about his hand wasn't because he was asked about it, it was just a convenient prop.

Michael invented something that sounded like him. The important thing was that Isobel thought it was him. Max knew he was lying, tried to stop him from taking the blame for her, but what was the alternative?

The disappointment on her face had to hurt less than the self-loathing she'd feel if she knew the truth.

Four times Michael lied about his hand and how the fourth time leads to a lot of truths. First 3 are pre-pilot, fourth is post 1.13.

comment: this is another gen fic that i really wanted to include on the list, even if it’s not “technically” malex. michael’s hand is a tough subject, even after the season finale, so it’s interesting to have a character study that focuses on it. this fic has the bonus of dealing with episode 13′s fallout. i like the little build up to the final part, with the ways that michael has lied about his hand, culminating in the last part where he doesn’t want to lie to people anymore (especially alex). i’m always a fan of the boys talking things out and figuring out what they need. fair warning: this fic ends on the “oh no max!” note and the boys aren’t in a relationship but they have discussed their feelings and the need to wait until michael is in a better headspace. i just really like the way they talk things out!
