Advice for Second Year of Med School
Keeping with last year's tradition of jotting down things I wish I knew during this particular year of med school, here's my insider advice for the second didactic year of medical school:
Second year is so much better than first year. So much more real clinical stuff with real patients, and even the knowledge part is clinical.
Don't get freaked out by other people. Use your resources and do what works for you. Everyone else will do something different and that's okay.
Life goes on outside of medical school. Be a part of it. Make time for friends and family.
Even if your school isn't testing you on all the material that boards resources cover, make sure you take the time to learn it. Studying for both your school and the boards simultaneously might take more time but its worth it when you get to dedicated study time and just have to review rather than learn a bunch of new material.
Cramfighter really only works for people who would make lists in the first place. I would get ahead on my tasks, and get secondhand stress from my friends with like 30 overdue tasks
Start doing boards questions and studying early. Don't be that guy who tries to do 10,000 questions in one month, that's just not reasonable.
Don't use dedicated study time as an excuse to neglect yourself. You don't have to study 24/7, and it probably won't be very effective if you do. Work out, take a walk, do a face mask, go to your favorite brewery. You will come out on the other side and you need to be human when you do.
Crying about how you're going to fail is just straight up counterproductive. You have a goal: to pass the boards. Now go do something productive to accomplish that, crying just wastes your time, makes you sad, and brings you no closer to your goal. Snap out of it. (I told myself this a lot studying biochemistry)
Taking the USMLE before COMLEX is awesome because the time between them is just studying OMM and reviewing everything else. I had a whole week that I definitely didn't need between them and it was really hard to keep my motivation up, but I also had the time to take a day off after the USMLE.
