Strong July Trends Could Face a Midterm-Year Test
July has historically been one of the market’s stronger months, and the latest data continues to support that view. The accompanying chart compares average July performance during the most recent 21 years (2005–2025) with July performance in midterm election years since 1950.
The solid lines, representing the recent 21-year period, show a remarkably consistent upward trend across all major indexes. NASDAQ has been the standout performer, advancing steadily throughout the month and finishing with an average gain of just over 3%. The S&P 500, DJIA, Russell 1000, and Russell 2000 also exhibit strong positive trends, with gains generally building as July progresses, but slowing shortly after mid-month.
Historically, the market’s strength tends to build from a solid first trading day. While there have been brief pauses and/or pullbacks after mid-month, the overall trajectory remains positive. This pattern likely reflects July’s reputation as a seasonally favorable month, often supported by improving investor sentiment in anticipation of second-quarter earnings reports.
However, the dashed lines on the chart tell a different story for midterm election years. While the DJIA and S&P 500 have still managed modest gains on average, performance has been notably weaker. Small-cap stocks, represented by the Russell 2000, have historically struggled the most during midterm Julys, often finishing the month in negative territory. NASDAQ and Russell 1000 have also experienced greater volatility and less consistent gains.
Seasonal trends suggest July could continue to provide support for equities, but the midterm-year backdrop serves as a reminder that volatility can emerge quickly and unexpectedly.
For any of my divas who have read “Give Me More” from the Salacious Players Club — I’ve realized why I love Hunters character so much
Hunter’s personality is entirely how I imagine Ben (Soldier Boy) would be once he “settles down.” Although I don’t think he’d ever quite be as settled as Hunter is in the book. More so just how Hunter is with Isabel, that’s how I imagine Ben would be with a significant other. Like that drive to be better, to change to “deserve” them. Still being rough around the edges and reserved in a way that makes things tough sometimes, but soft and adoring toward his girl. Like she’s the greatest thing in the world to him but he can and will fuck you up if you give him the slightest reason to do so. I also (as I’m sure many of you know) always picture him settling down with someone younger which, to a much lesser extent, is also a lot like Hunter and Isabel.
Anyway, sorry for the ramble but I had to get it out of my brain. Totally recommend that whole series, but especially “Give Me More” if you’re into a throuple/developing three way relationship between a husband/wife/husbands best friend. 10s across the board.
An A321 taking the active at La Palma Airport on the Canary Island of La Palma, Spain
Screw everything here's some Samurai Pizza Cats stuff I picked up.
Everything but the vinyl figure (which I got for a better price than usual) is new. From one of several recent pop-up shops in Japan, this time where the art depicts the MCs holding flowers.
In this case I'd like to imagine they're for Carla and Jerry Atric.
I loved SPC as a kid, and the villains were my favorites because, you know, crows. And a rat. It pops up in my head from time to time, to the point of listening to the entire Samurai Pizza Cast (which is fun; give it a listen).
Also after the mistake of browsing the TVTropes SPC page, I channeled Comic Book Guy for a hot minute: They argue that dubbing the Big Cheese as a rat doesn't work because of his pointed ears and bushy tail.
I'll agree on the tail, but rats have been drawn with canid features in cartoons for forever--did we forget Splinter?! The way Japanese art often draws canids with prominent whiskers helps with the illusion.
And, normally I'm weebish about dub things, and there has to be someone who’s concerned with the integrity of Cat Ninja Legend Teyandee whom I don’t judge because I’ve been a Yu-Gi-Oh! dork since forever, but I love this guy and he can be whatever species he wants.
