Nato officials suspect Russia has been using the wreck of the MS Estonia cruise ship as a training area as well as potentially for espionage activities. An investigation has uncovered evidence that technical devices were placed at the wreck some years ago which enable precise navigation of underwater drones and robots.

Western security officials now believe that Russian armed forces have used the devices to train in the area. There are also suspicions that Russian agents could use the MS Estonia for spying by concealing sensory devices in the wreckage. Such devices could record identifiable features of Nato warships and submarines, such as the sounds of their propellers.

Absolutely disgusting and immoral behaviour from Russia, once again. MS Estonia is a tomb. It's a grave. It's a memorial.

This is like the Russians have set up their little military training and espionage centre at a cemetery in Estonia or Sweden (because most of the victims on MS Estonia were Swedish and Estonian), except that the cemetery where the Russian little green men walk all over people's graves is also the site of an enormous tragedy that claimed the lives of everyone buried there.

The sinking of MS Estonia is one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters in Europe. Out of the 989 passengers and crew, 852 people died, and most of them remain inside the ship. That's 86% of all people on board, proportionally more than died on the Titanic.

To this day one of the best pieces of journalism was the 2004 account of the sinking of the MS Estonia. Europe's worst maritime disaster after WW2. It was written by William Langewiesche, who wrote and is still writing incredible stuff and I urge everyone to check out his contributions to The Atlantic, Haarper's Bazaar and Vanity Fair.

Langewiesche is one of the best disaster writers out there and his articles are always a must-read.

His theory about MH370 is probably one of the most compelling and complete that I've read. He also wrote a great article about the mid-air collision of a Boeing 737 and a Legacy 600 over the Amazon.

And I think his article about the El Faro's sinking is kind of a sister to his MS Estonia article, though it was due to different reasons.

The only drawback is most of these links go to paygate locations. But they're great writing, and well worth figuring out a way to get to them.

What happened with the MS Estonia disaster?

Bad things.

Like, I really can't deviate from what really happened IRL in this case, because having a sentient boat doesn't matter when the cargo door rips off - it's still gonna sink, and the warren of tiny interior hallways are still gonna trap people inside it and a lot of people are still gonna die.

And people are still going to have conspiracy theories about what happened. In fact, there might be more, because it's relatively common knowledge that ships often survive sinking to the bottom unless they happen to break up on the way down. Estonia didn't break up, but nobody really has checked as to whether slamming into the bottom killed him or not. The Estonians and the Finns claim he's dead, don't want to pay the massive costs to raise him, and tried to cover the whole wreck up - literally, with cement. It didn’t work, but it has made any future salvage attempt immeasurably more difficult. The 1995 Estonia agreement, which prohibits citizens from signatory countries from even approaching the wreck, makes things even worse. (This is a real thing btw - the IRL conspiracy theories gain a lot of credibility because the governments DO NOT want people going down there.)
