nothing reminds me more how absolutely culturally relative the concept of 'passing' is more than the times I have seen commentary about how Ms Fraser so obviously doesn't pass in Some Like It Red which makes it awkward.
I watched the episode and was like, oh yeah, that's a totally fine job of cross-dressing, we should let more lead characters cross-dress for fun and enrichment! there were bits that made me cringe, it is a very 90s episode, but Fraser's appearance and mannerisms were simply not among them. I was fully prepared to accept Fraser passing as a woman for the bits of the episode that required it, because that's what I saw.
and that's because - I have observed this IRL more than once - 'passing' for trans women and transfeminine people in my culture does not work the same way as 'passing' in American and Canadian culture. I, a pretty conventionally feminine cis woman, got misgendered in the US because I fell outside of acceptable female norms. my wife, a trans woman, essentially never gets misgendered in our home country but routinely did there. gender presentation isn't static! gender is cultural!
Thinking about them to this song makes me ill 😦
Some Like It Red
(Stacked Rewatch/Timestamp Roulette Art Challenge)
Damn, as excited as I was about the Some Like It Red week, here I am, producing a quick sketch on Sunday and nothing more. I could've picked any number of lovely close-ups of Ms. Fraser, but I have a soft spot for how she looks in this street scene, her hair open and her jacket properly cinched at the waist. Also, always fun to do a crowd scene and trying to keep a balance between the people that are your focus and the rest of the crowd. I moved things around a bit to make Fraser and Ray stand out a bit more, not having random people cover them so much.
Who still plays disco?
I couldn't turn down the opportunity to illustrate Ms Fraser and the guy she's dancing with shaking a leg at the school dance. This screenshot is dedicated to @syrupmap in return for all the wonderful Ms Fraser posts she made with me in mind <3
Please tell me if there is an episode you'd like me to make a game screenshot of!
