I'm going to post a great thing about The Tick every day until it is renewed.
Spoilers!
Day 2: The resolution of Lint's S2 arc is perfect. Having her be a complete hero - that can't happen, at least not right now. She's two steps removed from the death of Arthur's father. At the same time, having her be a complete villain would be contradictory to what they've been showing over the course of the season. But having her double cross Hobbes and become 'the woman who stole AEGIS?' It's absolutely genius. That's the Lint we all know and know.
Follow me if you want to see something great about The Tick on your dash every day.
Overkill and pain
I’ve noticed that in some way Overkill’s character revolves around pain. And not just pain that he inflicts on others, but the pain that is inflicted on him.
His backstory is a mix between Punisher and Winter Soldier. What Overkill and Bucky have in common is that they both were sidekicks of patriotic heroes and then they were recruited by intel agencies to work as soldier/secret agents/assassins (however, while Winter Soldier’s backstory included brainwashing and amnesia, it certainly wasn’t the case with Estevan). What Overkill and Frank Castle have in common is that they both are vigilantes who kill criminals because they’ve lost their family (in fact, the story about Overkill suffering a breakdown and going rogue kinda resembles what happened to Frank). Both Winter Soldier and Punisher are broken men who suffered a lot and lost almost everything - all that was left for them was their mission which involves killing, maiming and torturing criminals.
So Ms. Lint seduced Straight Shooter and stole Flag Ship’s codes. That led to Terror blinding and killing Flag Five. Straight Shooter, rendered blind and useless, hears screams of his family and then gets his hands crushed. He feels pain of being betrayed by woman he loved; pain of losing people he cared for; pain of his hands being crushed and pain of his eyes being eaten up by a virus. He probably even feels guilty.
AEGIS takes him in. He is given mechanical prosthetics of hands and eyes, but also a specialized military training. We can safely assume that this training involved not only how to shoot or fight, but also how to survive in the hostile enviornment and how to resist torture if Overkill will ever found himself captured. For the first couple of years Overkill works as AEGIS agent.
I wonder what was the reason behind his breakdown. Maybe he was haunted by memories of Flag Five. Or maybe it wasn’t breakdown at all, maybe he planned to go rogue for years but needed a good moment; and the story about breakdown was made up by AEGIS itself.
Anyway, Overkill finds Arthur’s reddit threat on Terror being alive and finally has some life purpose: to hunt down Terror and kill him. However, at some point in the series he says that he counts on not only killing Terror, but also dying with him. Overkill wants to end Terror and suspects he will die in a fight. Because Overkill think that the only thing he has is veangance and when veangance will be obtained, his life will have no more meaning.
Then we have Midnight. Overkill and Midnight clearly don’t like each other. Overkill calls Midnight “mascot”, Midnight calls Overkill “sidekick” and eventually they start to fight. This results in later scene when Overkill treats the bite wound Midnight gave him. However, he is sure that Midnight will warn Superian because “deep down he’s a good mutt”. When Arthur points out Midnight almost killed him, Overkill says: “This is how we relate.” So they were fighting before. Not only that - it was only in the fight, when they were causing each other pain that they kinda, sorta felt close.
And then, there’s Lint. He’s obviously attracted to her. She’s bad, she holds him captive, she shoots lightning bolts at him. But look at how he reacts to her torture. He not only plays tough, almost encouraging her to attack him, but he also smiles while being hit. Maybe it’s just him taunting her, but maybe he wants to feel pain. This is after all, a woman that broke his heart and yet he still is drawn to her. And Dot even points out that what’s between them is unhealthy.
Overkill lived with emotional and physical pain ever since the death of Flag Five. It is also safe to assume that he feels guilt over what he - unkonwingly at the time - caused; and that he seeks death to some extend. Therefore my theory is this:
Overkill thinks he desreves pain.
He thinks he deserves to be punished for letting himseilf fall for Lint.
He thinks he desreves to be punished for letting his family die.
He thinks he deserves every bite from Midnight and every shockwave from Lint. He deserves to be alone and to die in fire while avenging Flag Five.
So in some ways him meeting Tick, Arthur and Dot was the moment when he could not only find closure, but also start to abandon this destructive mindset. Maybe he will, maybe not. Time will tell.
Miss Lint from The Tick!
