The major theme of this chapter is the rejection of adulthood. The adults are scared of dying, are projecting their fear of dying onto children, and so they pour their cowardice into creating eternal youth.
The children, of course, are the ones made to suffer.
Ms. Gracie exemplifies this: an adult telling children that their mutilation and loss of humanity is good because it saves them from death. But, then she is made into a toy.
Through Lily, Ms. Gracie ultimately becomes a child again, and that is the part I find so fascinating: the Prototype kept her alive BECAUSE of this.
And, that is also how it is punishing her. In this way, Ms. Gracie transitions: she is the adult harming children in the pursuit of youth and the child being harmed due to her own adult actions.
The Prototype also performs both roles through its torture of Lily and its resumption of Playtime's project: it is the Judge. It is God. Like an adult, it can lash out with unnecessary cruelty and experience feeble resistance. But, once upon a time, it too was young.
