On June 11, 1940, Czechoslovak fighter pilot Miroslav Štandera was shot down in France. His Morane-Saulnier M.S.406 was hit by a Bf 109 near Épernay; after losing fuel, he made an emergency landing and severely injured his spine. He survived, went to Britain, and fought again with the RAF. #OTD #WW2 #letectví

Shortly before, on December 9, 1939, this same pilot had encountered trouble in the MS 406 No. 209, code-named “3,” which had lost its Karman stabilizers during a dive. During repairs, clear evidence of sabotage was found: the control cable was discovered cut in half near an access hatch. Despite precautions taken by the command to protect the aircraft, doubts remained regarding the cause of the fire on No. 76.
