Helloo Mod Chem here about to make her first post ever! I wanna talk about typing quirks because they're so fun and funky and varied and I love them! This is more of a How To Make a Quirk guide I think but yeah let's do this.
Throug the entirety of Homestuck, there are a lot of typing quirks. At first they seem quite random, but if you look harder you can see that they all reflect something about the troll that uses them. Let's take Karkat for an example- his typing quirk is all caps. Which is, quite literally, screaming, shouting. When you get to know Karkat more, you learn that he's an angry little guy with pent up rage. He's an overall shouty man and that reflects on his quirk- it's just the way he talks translated into text.
Nepeta's begins with :33< which is her lusus's face, representing something she likes, as well as all the cat puns, reflecting what she wants to be and what she sees herself as.
Terezi's is different because it's based on something she believes in. I can't quite remember it right now, but it was something about someone she looked up to, I really don't remember.
What did I say all this for? To show that typing quirks aren't made randomly, they represent something about the troll using them, be it their interests or the way they talk normally. So, when making a typing quirk for your troll, it's a good idea to show something about them in it- even if it's silly or if it's so deep that most readers won't get it. If your troll likes whatever the troll equivalent of basketball is, for example, you could make their O a ○ or ● to represent a ball!
I think it's important to note that not everything has to have a meaning while making your fantroll. Although it's fun to throw in these kind of meanings, if you want to give a troll a quirk just because you think it's funny or cool, go for it! This post is merely to help those who want a slightly deeper understanding of the typing quirks in HS.
