I don’t remember much about last year, but the year before he was also in the middle of promoting the Warblers album which might have had something to do with it.
I mean, I don't particularly care what Darren's doing. That's just my motto on life. I think he deserves as much of a private life as he wants. And I know (from interviews) he wants one. But in this case...I just think it's really just promotion. Like you said, he was promoting things in previous years. He did something with H&M I believe last Coachella. It's the ONLY reason why we saw him so much online. He never posted much himself. This year he just isn't doing that. Whatevs. No skin off my back. If I were at Coachella I wouldn't be on my phone tweeting or Facebooking. I'd be drunk and high with my friends, dancing to music and making memories.

LOL, Lord KNOWS I don't want this to turn into wank again, trust me I don't. To answer your question, a lot of people have justified the trope by giving suggestions from canon like the Gap Attack, and Blaine not being in love with Kurt from day one, or kissing Rachel and those just INFURIATE me. From where I'm sitting, it feels like sour grapes and fandom lacking nuance and not realizing that every group of friends does not need to include a "dumb one" and for some, it's about dumbing Blaine down to build their fave up. A lot of it, even if subconsciously definitely comes from a place of feeling like canon Blaine is "too much" and needs to be brought down a few pegs.
But you're right, there are no canonical nuggests that support it, but according to the self appointed Fandom Moms, we're not allowed to say things are out of character and it's our interpretation that's "wrong" and stop being mean to them. *foot stomp
