“And he coming forth saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.”
Mt 14:14
Our Lord has compassion on us when most of us would refuse or just not feel like it (after mourning his cousin who had been beheaded by Herod, see Mt 14:13).
Reading on further in Matthew 14, when Jesus comes to the disciples on the water, and they are afraid, “immediately” he tells them “Take heart, it is I; be not afraid.” (26-27). And later Peter falters on the water and cries out “Lord, save me” (30), Jesus “immediately” reaches out and catches him (31).
God always has compassion on us. He always wants and is there, remaining with us in our lonely places (even at 3AM or the “fourth watch of the night”, Mt 14:25) eager to save, eager to have compassion on us. The Almighty God who can calm our storms, restore our entire being, and sustains us continually, wants to save; He wants to be with us. “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (33)
