Mt. Ashland, Oregon

At 7,536′ Mount Ashland is the highest peak in the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon. The PCT crosses the southern flank of the mountain which, from the trail, appears relatively modest in size and height. The image above is taken from the peak looking at the north side of Mt. Shasta (which is nearly double the height of Mt. Ashland). As you probably figured, it was named for the city of Ashland, a popular trail town located 8.6 miles north of the mountain. The east and north sides of the mountain are also home to a ski area.

The Siskiyou Mountains are a subrange of the Klamath Mountains in northwestern California and southwestern Oregon. The five miles on the PCT going west from Mt. Ashland are among my favorite ridge walks on the trail.

She changed my life. We immediately got down to the core of things like once lost sisters, found. We shared many words, and silence; sun on our skin, and snow in our bones. We shared our suns and our moons. We connected on higher mental planes, and deep within our roots. Her voice was soft like a crushed velvet sailboat, gliding on a lake at sunset. She did things like hand me a crystal and a bag of tea, and tell me: “Don’t pick at your mental wounds.”

Ashland, Oregon I can’t remember the last time I’ve had a summer that seemed so much like…..well, summer.
