CANNONBALL! The return of the Cannonball on the #LongIslandRailRoad marks the unofficial start of #summer. The “Cannon Ball” made its first trip to #Montauk from Jamaica, NY in 1890, and operated until the 1970s. The continuous service was provided on weekday afternoons from Long Island City until 1951 when service was then provided from Penn Station. Originally, the Cannon Ball was a train composed entirely of parlor cars – the epitome of luxury – and many regarded the Cannon Ball as a prestigious way to arrive in the Hamptons. In 1966, New York State purchased the LIRR from the Pennsylvania Rail Road and put it under the operating authority of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (then the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Authority).
In 2013, the Cannonball returned to the LIRR as an homage to the original “Cannon Ball”. The Cannonball East is a Friday afternoon service that runs non-stop from Penn Station to the Hamptons. The Cannonball West runs only on Sunday evenings (or on Monday during holidays) as a return service to Penn Station from the Hamptons. The trip from Penn Station to Montauk takes less than two hours, and the last two cars on the 12-car train provide reserved seating that often sells out.
Currently, the Cannonball is the only named LIRR train in service. Former services include the “Fisherman’s Special”, “Sunrise Special”, and “Shelter Island Express”. Do you remember any of these services?
