A Q&A with M.T. Anderson!

What was your favorite book as a teenager?

I didn't have a single one -- like many teen readers, I had a favorite book every week. My enthusiasms stormed back and forth from side to side like pirates trying to right a ship in a storm. I suppose if I had to choose just one, I'd say Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles.

  What was your very first story about?

I wrote it when I was in first grade. It was about a group of children who find a time machine and travel to the year 5000, in the far future. They see robots and space ships and floating buildings with weird ramps. Then they realize they are three thousand years old, so they all die and crumble into dust. The dust blows slowly away in the exhaust of a passing jet-packs. Hm. This makes me seem like kind of a downer as a kid.

  What is one question about your books/writing that you wish someone would ask but never has?

"In your books for younger readers, you mention a lot of baked goods. Would you like us to make any of these for you?"
