spoilery headcanon/theory i have for matilda and qi...

the reason matilda and duvos were alerted to the presence of the starship ruins and the olympia is because qi came to sandrock seeking it.

matilda's regularly served as substitute mayor for trudy when she's out on her expeditions, and this has happened for a while before the one we see the first part of the game. so it's possible that whenever qi applied to be the researcher, she was the one who oversaw his application and hiring process.

qi came to sandrock specifically because he wanted to find the olympia. it's likely that he mentioned that in either his application or an interview with matilda. being a facility that a) will have a lot of powerful parts as an aerospace facility and b) the fact that no one's found it yet means that it's likely still holding a lot of good stuff, it would def pique matilda's interest as a hotbed of resources for duvos.
