Ok so saga creatures got me thinking about Perenia (my fan plane) and my seasonal incarnations. So basically each season is physically brought by an incarnation of that season. Originally I had just regular creature cards for them. But now I'm wondering if saga creatures might fit better with the whole cyclical/seasonal theme.

So basically I mocked up a few potential version for my spring incarnation. None of these cards are set in stone, it's mostly showing off the theme adn potential ways to execute it. The three ideas are: keep it as a basic creature; a transform card that represents the season 'down time' and transforms into the saga creature showing them bring the season; or a full saga creature that basically suspends itself after it brings the season.

Which do you think is the best design potential/flavor? (judge it on the design potential/flavor and not the actual cards since they are not finalized or power balanced at all really)

I've been really feeling the world-building bug lately and I've been thinking hard on Perenia. Realizing I want my incarnations to be flip/saga creatures has really inspired me to work more! But I really want to get to more world-building again to help me work on the flavor for those cards as well as the plane/mechanics in general. What I need..... is a map.

I have now discovered a super cool site called inkarnate which lets you make alllll kinds of maps including fantasy world maps! I highly recommend checking it out if you can, there's a LOT you can do for free!

Anywhosies, as much as I'd like to keep it under wraps until completely done but I get too excited, so have a first peak at the base map of Perenia!

Fan Character Plane Friday

So I’ve seen some other fandoms have OC days where there is a fun prompt to talk about/develop your OCs every week, and I thought HEY the mtg community has a lot of people with a lot of OCs, maybe we can do it too!

Ok so you know the drill, I’ll give a prompt and you can respond to it by answering directly, doing a doodle, making a custom card, or a little flash fic.

Feeling like a fanplane kind of day! What kinds of creature types are on your plane? Do you have any unique types that you made just for your plane?

I think I finally figured out Floramore, it is the plane of life. It is a plane so overflowing with life that the line between flora and fauna are blurred, and there is no death only life anew as you are reborn as a part of the plane. With such a verdant life force emotions have a physical effect upon the magic of the plane. Peoples wonder and fear of the wild places are what give birth to the fey like being that populate it, while darker emptions are what empower the witches and their curses. It is also a plane that you can never truly know what is alive or sentient. For a fox that is seen as rather clever by a local village may slowly start to become more anthropomorphic until he stands upon his back paws with magic in his eyes. Where a sword used by a rather violent knight may develop a taste of bloodshed and one day after it has been set down for to long will splitter its blade into spider like legs so that it might sate it bloodlust itself.

Ooooo I love it! Sounds like a home run to me :D It fits very well with everything you already have for it and Marcel’s backstory! Plus it’s just a fun concept that gives you so much to play with! It definitely gives you a lot of potential with the fey and how they could be very similar to humans or very otherworldly or both. Plus it’s got a lot of that classic fairytale vibe I love but it still feels very distinctive from Eldraine. Very good idea!

Ok here’s a first draft for a cycle I’m doing for Perenia!

The idea is the seasons affect everyone but the home of those seasons are better prepared for it. Awaken is a major mechanic for the Spring faction so they probably have more creature lands than everyone else. Tokens, and especially insect tokens, are a big thing in the Summer faction, so they probably already have several insects in play. Graveyard play is big for Autumn so even if they lose creatures to this, they probably have ways to bring them back and probably have more threats in their graveyard already. I’m working on a tapped-matters/tapped-benefits-you mechanic for the Winter faction so tapping all their creatures won’t hurt them as much and may even be an advantage. Still might make some tweaks but I like these so far!

Now I’ve got to figure out how to make the WBR anti-season one. It will be one-sided for sure since that faction formed by blocking the effects of seasons. Still working out how I want to work it flavorfully (and what to call it so it fits the cycle!)

So! Magus here, I ended up reading a little bit about Perenia, I must say I'm very intrigued! I indeed was going to ask a question that was solved by reading what you've already written, so that takes care of that! Basically I was going to ask about the origin of these avatars that change the seasons and how they're integrated in society (eg do they communicate with mortals or not, are they the head of a hierarchical structure etc). The oldwalker part is very interesting, and a clever way of adding a 5th "season" to the mix. Though the guy originally was, well, not exactly "good" it sounds like, I wonder if the faction nowadays still follows his ideals (seems like it, since the avatar is called Liberator by them)... and if there are Perenia-natives that joined them.

One thing to keep in mind. I believe you were lamenting the fact that if you use MtG standards, certain creatures like elves always have to be Green, aven always have to be white etc etc. It is true that this is the case in MtG, but in reality it's a veeeery flexible rule. Take humans: they can be in any color, right? But why? Just because they can learn any kind of magic? The same could be said of any species. Yes yes of course it's important to keep some distinctions between colors, Elves are Green Goblins are Red yadda yadda but in truth there's no like... 100% fact-based reason WHY a goblin MUST be red-aligned. And in fact, we DO see some divergences, once a race gets popular/big enough. Look at Tarkir, with dragons of every color (notably, with many missing Red). Look at Elves, which have become pretty much as versatile as humans in recent times (some recent examples: Delina, Ayara, Kalain, Nadier etc)... basically, don't let it be a constraint on you. You're not designing an mtg set, after all!

Yeah the avatars are natural phenomenons of the plane and if destroyed reform into themselves (Though that is a chaotic event and when that happened in Perenian history it took a few years for them to form and settle the cycles of the plane back to normal). The leaders of the different regions/factions take inspiration from them but yeah they do nothing to lead. I go back and forth on how I want them to interact with mortals. Part of me wants them to be so aloof they don’t even acknowledge them, part of me wants them to just behave as creatures of their type would, and part of me wants them to be very intelligent and aware of themselves, the world, and their effect on the peoples of the plane. Realistically it’s probably a mix of all three depending on the time of year.

The Oldwalker I see as a very true neutral kind of character and he definitely recruited Perenia natives to his faction (though a large faction of their starting country was indeed seeded from other planes). Nowadays his faction still follows his ideals of freedom and independence but now that the people have protection from the unpredictable and previously uncontrollable weather fluctuations they have lost a lot of, if not all of, their animosity for the four natural avatars. The other factions have more or less accepted them as a full-fledged country though the different seasons hold them with varying attitudes. The spring faction still holds a huge grudge while the winter faction has mostly forgiven them. Fall and Summer are somewhere in between.

It is true about the colors! It’s hard because part of me wants to actually make a fan-set. I even started making a bunch of cards (sadly I don’t currently have access to the computer I made them on so even though I didn’t get very far, I don’t even have what I started on Dx). But it’s true, flavor-wise I shouldn’t limit myself too much. Sometimes it will be flavor relevant, for example elves having a strong tie to green mana and that’s why they don’t live in Stillfrost or the artifact lands (uggghhh names, my bane). Most other humanoids I should try to worry less about. Mostly I’m worried about being too heavily green, but i think Perenia just leans that way (doesn’t help that it’s my favorite color….).
