For the past three years, The Shoebox has been showcasing historic photos from the archives of PSNH, the largest electric utility in New Hampshire. Everything from early bucket trucks to the construction of hydroelectric dams—even an employee basketball team.
Some of these photos—like the one here of a horse-drawn “linetruck”—were taken around the turn of the (last) century, before PSNH was formed in 1926. The guys in this picture worked for Manchester Traction, Light & Power Co.
In 1926, Manchester Traction became part of Public Service of New Hampshire, and earlier this year, PSNH became part of Eversource Energy.
Today, The Shoebox is now Ghosts of ’Lectricity, with a new design and a new web address: ghostsoflectricity.com. We’ve got loads of photos from New Hampshire’s electric past and can't wait to share them with you.
You can follow us here on Tumblr, or at our new Twitter handle, @lectricghosts. (If you’re subscribed via RSS, you should update your feed.)
Most of the photos we’ve come across don’t have captions or dates. We do our best to add information when we can find it, but in many cases, we just don’t know enough. If you have any background information on any of these photos (e.g., names, location, years/dates), please click on the “Fill us in” link at the bottom of each post. Be sure to let us know if you want credit for your submission.
Special thanks to Martin Murray for hanging on to this great photo!
