Asking myself “What would I do if i was well? If I had energy and my brain/body worked as they should?”. Feeling a lot of anxiety after some of the things that came to mind, because it felt like NOW i have to do them. But i dont, im just daydreaming about being functional.
medical tip of the day
from a doctor who loves when patients take on a less passive role in their medical care:
Always carry an updated medication list on you along with a list of your allergies.
In the event of a medical emergency, this list will be very helpful. Also, in creating this list, you will be able to ask your doctor what each medication is for and whether you still need to be taking them.
medical tip of the day
from a doctor who is addicted to honey:
Don't feed babies honey as they are at risk of developing botulism.
medical tip of the day
from a doctor who just recently realized how annoying CO detectors are when their batteries need to be replaced:
Consider getting a carbon monoxide detector if you use a gas stove or fireplace to keep warm during the winter months.
Result: if there is a blockage in the ventilation system of your gas-powered heat source, there is a risk for lethal carbon monoxide poisoning with symptoms that range from lightheadedness, confusion, and very red lips to nothing at all until it's too late. Be warned that a smoke detector isn't necessarily a CO detector and vice versa, though there are detectors that serve both functions.
medical tip of the day
from a doctor who suffers from seasonal allergies:
Don't rinse your sinuses with unsterilized tap water.
Result: you'll be at risk for infection by a brain-eating amoeba (Naegleria fowleri).
medical tip of the day
from a very sleepy doctor:
Stretch when you wake up.
You don't have to get out of bed to do it. Take a deep breath, arch your back, stretch out your arms and legs, lean over from side to side, and twist your torso for a few seconds. If you're like me, chances are that you'll pleasantly pop a few creaky joints and afterwards, you'll feel much better. If you don't stretch for the rest of the day, at least you've done it once in the morning.
medical tip of the day
from a doctor whose grandma does this all the time and drives her crazy:
Do not use someone else's medication.
Result: near fatal Stevens-Johnson rash in a patient who borrowed her mother's leftover antibiotics (she didn't remember what kind it was). If you feel sick enough to feel like you need antibiotics, please be seen by a health professional who can prescribe the proper medications and monitor you appropriately.
