Monday MU-se: The "Rare Bird," Iris Apfel

At almost 93, Iris Apfel is an interior designer, a business woman and most of all a popular style icon!

She had been to art school, worked under a fashion designer and an illustrator and was a writer for Women's Wear Daily.

13 years after she retired, the MOMA had an exhibition of all the rare pieces of clothing and accessories in her wardrobe, from coats and gowns from designers in the 60s to trinkets from 19th century Tibet and Bhutan and Native American jewelry. And all the mannequins at the exhibition wore Apfel's trademark over sized round glasses!

This exhibition was called "The Rare Bird of Fashion."

Her style at 83 became her claim to fame. And now at almost 93 she's a sensation in the world of fashion! She's inspired many with her style, like in Vogue Pelle there was an editorial called, "Be like Iris Apfel" where the models wore her owl-like glasses and held bird cages in their hands.

Even in her 90s Apfel doesn't shy away from bright colours, in clothes or make-up. In early 2013, MAC Cosmetics launched a collection in her name, all the products were named after birds, from the Scarlet Ibis lipstick to Robin's Egg eyeshadow.

On the subject of aging she says:

"Coco Chanel once said that what makes a woman look old is trying desperately to look young. Why should one be ashamed to be 84? Why do you have to say that you're 52? Nobody's going to believe you anyway, so why be such a fool? It's nice that you got to be so old. It's a blessing."

Mulain hopes he can be as fab as Iris Apfel in his older years! Don't you?
