Okay, cool cool cool - now can we talk about why on gods green earth Voldy decided to make horcuxes when (as I’ve just discovered) Armando Dippett, the Hogwarts Headmaster before Dumbles, lived to be about 355???? Like what the hell dude??

So I’m trying to write the next part of my jancy s4 fic, which is meant to be an alternating POV of missing moments within the season, only I’ve got about a dozen scene ideas for Jonathan/Cali Crew but only…two for Nancy/Hawkins Gang. Whoops.

I keep seeing some posts on Pinterest on "how to construct a character" and while not all of them are bad, the most grating ones to me are the lists. You know, the very simple ones like "what does your character like and dislike? What are their quirks?" etc. Like, that's all surface-level stuff. Preferring cats over dogs does not a character make.

And I'd argue that picking some character traits is only a little better. As in "this character is really brave, strong and cares for their friends". Ok? And?

Why does your character prefer cats over dogs? Do they prefer a companion that is more independent and in general more calm? Why are they brave? In which situation does that bravery falter? Why did they become strong? Do they always care for their friends or does their selfishness sometimes override that, either for good or for bad?

To make a good character you have to understand psychology at least to a degree. You gotta know how the human mind works at least in general, what kinds of events influence thoughts and actions in certain ways. And to know your character, you need to construct at least some kinds of motivations, ethics and morals, no matter how vague they are in your own mind.
