My Ashley Girl <3
Everyone say hiiii <3 loml
Do you guys like her? I've been discovering and enjoying doll tumblr lately and I'm so excited to share her with the world <3. She's an Our Generation doll- Tanisha, I believe- but she's a physical replacement for a doll I've had forever. So, in my heart, I've had her forever, too.
Also, does anyone have recommendations for how I can make her a prosthetic leg? She's got her crutch which is very beautiful, but I'd love to get her a leg, and the companies (company) which makes them unfortunately only makes them for kids and AG dolls.
Hugs <3
Bonus Ashley new prosthetic leg content! Featuring her service dog, Windy.
I crocheted her dog, Windy, a stylized harness with bags and yellow labels. The bags hold Windy's orange collar and a small teal ball :). They can probably hold her leash, as well.
Ashley probably didn't necessarily need a service dog, but what little girl doll doesn't want a pet. Windy has a My Little Pony inspired name, but I didn't manage to finish brainstorming... it also sounds like Wendy! I chose the dog with colored ears and a colored tail because I know people with service dogs dye their fur :) which is so cute. I also did research on Windy's harness, although it's kind of doll stylized- most harnesses aren't made of yarn. I think Windy has the prettiest bisexual colors!
Ashley girl has a new (handmade) leg!
Thank you to @instantfrost for suggesting prosthetic leg suggestions!
18 inch doll American girl doll prosthetic leg (she's not AG, but for reach purposes)
I did research on below the knee prosthetics for this project, as she's amputated just below her knee. Under the prosthetic "cap" is a pink/purple bandage that she's been wearing to cover the hole of her amputation (her leg is stuffed with cotton balls), which works perfectly to stick to the prosthetic and serve as a liner!
The leg cap is made of worbla thermoplastic, which I molded with a hair dryer. I had a little bit of difficulty with it not getting hot enough, so I heated some of my tools with a lighter as well. The back of the prosthetic is laced up, I pierced the holes with a heated tac. Those laces also go through the bottom of the prosthetic (is there another word for that?) to keep them strung together. Flat, the plastic looks something like this:
The small holes are all strung together so the the bottom flap forms the bottom, and a thick black screw goes through the big hole. As you can see in the first and second photo, I wrapped the string around her knee as you would tie an ice skate and tied it off at the top.
I bored the hole through the bottom flap for a screw to go through, as these kinds of prosthetics often have a rod that functions as an ankle, using a series of increasingly large pins and crochet hooks (heated with a lighter).
I was able to actually screw it in to the plastic, which is great because then I can adjust the angle of her false foot! Don't tell anyone, but I used a left shoe because she got rid of all her right shoes a while ago. When standing and sitting, dolls feet often point outwards, so it's also helpful in that way for the false foot to be a little angled out.
Her shoe is stuffed with tin foil to fill it out, as the prosthetic would be fake in real life anyway, and the idea is to not remove the shoe. I found in my research that tennis shoes (particularly no-tie shoes, which I didn't use) are recommended for prosthetic users. Covering the tin foil is a curved piece of plastic, shown in photo three, with another hole bored through it for the screw. The head of the screw is under this plastic, so it's technically upside down. I tied her shoe's laces tightly onto this plastic, keeping it secure.
This project took me something like five iterations to get it right, but I'm really pleased with what I was able produce! The last iteration was almost perfect, but the leg was too short, so I made the cap longer. I think in real life the cap would be shorter (and more streamlined), but the screw was kind of short, so that's okay. If anyone wants to recreate this, I recommend making a mock up of paper, and making the leg a little longer than her real leg because she'll be a little taller when wearing a left shoe.
It stays on well and feels quite secure, and even looks smooth, which was difficult in the beginning! Part of my reason for writing this post is that I couldn't find many resources on 18 inch doll prosthetic legs, so I had to get creative. I hope this serves as a guide for anyone out there like me! Again, I'm really quite pleased, and Ashley seems very excited ☺️.
The sweater is finished!
56 patches and 6 and a half months later, I finished what I have named my Lofty Goals Sweater on the morning of Sunday, May 12.
This sweater is my baby, I had SUCH a fun time working on her and weaving myself into her. Thank you for everyone's enthusiastic support along the way, and to all the people who complimented me on the street, here (as promised) is the finished product!
Please feel free to ask about any patches, l'd love to talk more about my work.
Thank you to @roll-for-charisma and @blue-p0tat0 for the photography and @toddhowardschildhoodbully for posing me!
Gloves I was very excited to make for a recent commission <3
