Not what I'm mad at, that was said more jokingly. I'm mad because of the asshole response when the person "apologizes" for getting it wrong. I make the mistake all the time. I don't mean to, and I have to apologize every time. Sorry.
However, if you ever misgender someone, it’s rude to explain the rules you were brought up with or saying how hard it is to switch. Just gotta quickly apologize and correct your mistake and move on rather than make an explanation. (Not to mention they/them has also always been used to refer to someone of an undefined gender. For example, saying something along the lines of “if another teacher says ___, I’ll ___ them.”)
