A cowboy killer stolen from her brother’s back-pocket dangling from her lips, Maxine Mayfield was sprawled on the club’s couch in the perfect representation of what a modern art painter would name as Seventeen-Years Old Boredom. As the music in the room went on high enough to cover voices and even her own damn thoughts, Max was pretty surprised to see that Billy was seriously keeping up with that pop bullshit. Considering the kind of ear-smashing music he forced her to listen everyday while driving to school, Max would have thought he avoided that sort of places, but living in Hawkins had definitely reduced their expectations regarding parties and clubs. Any place was okay enough when there was alcohol in a glass and smoke in the lungs.
Max wasn’t sure why she had followed him there, since she was anything but a fan of sweaty strangers dancing too close to each other. Maybe all she had wanted was a night far from home and Niel’s unpredictable mood-swings, or maybe she was just used to watch over her step-brother when the weekend approached and the need for boredom-breaking mayhem got louder in his blue eyes. Keeping an eye on Billy Hargrove wasn’t something Maxine could just do explicitly, though, so coming up with the most originals excuses to hang around and prevent him for getting wasted on the car after having too much fun. Those nights she sometimes had the honour of driving the Camaro.
« Cause I’m bored, Billy, but not desperate. » Max snorted an half-laugh, looking at the unknown guy that was staring at her since the moment she had set foot in that goddamn club. Being Billy’s step-sister meant no guy had ever the gut to approach her openly, but making a move wasn’t something she intended to do when a boy was just meh, either. « Isn’t it time to go, anyway? »
