Mickalene Thomas
Multimedia artist Mickalene Thomas was born in 1971 in Camden, New Jersey. Thomas is known for ornate portraits of Black women using acrylic, enamel, and rhinestone. Drawing from a variety of artistic influences, her work emphasizes both female beauty and agency. Thomas had her first major solo show in 2012 at the Brooklyn Museum. Her art can be found in the collections of institutions such as the Whitney, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum. Thomas has won many awards, including the Gordon Parks Foundation Award.
