MDV Class Reflections

I am really enjoying my Full Sail journey to Mastery in New Media Journalism. I just finished month six, Multimedia Development and Editing and I learned so much in the last four weeks. To be a successful journalist on 2017, you need to have a wheelhouse full of different skill sets. This class really helped add a lot of new tools to my portfolio. Starting week one and throughout the rest of the course, we learned to use Adobe Spark. I remember reading an article about Spark directed towards the Graphic Design community when I was still in undergrad. The design community wasn’t very pleased with this resource because it made creating feature images with text and other graphics easy for someone without design knowledge. After using Spark for the month, I really think this is a great resource for everyone. In the instance where breaking news happens, a journalist won’t have time to wait for a graphic designer to make a custom graphic. I loved Spark so much that I have shown the people I work with this resource to use for my radio station 107.9 the Link’s website and social media accounts.

Looking back at the Mastery assignment from month one, I anticipated that the MDV class would “teach me how to package audio, video, and photos together to create compelling stories.” I would say my expectations were met and far exceeded. I always wanted to do a podcast, and this class made me finally cross that off of my bucket list. I’ve created one for my website about weight loss surgery, and I am working on developing another lifestyle blog about dating. 

I came into this class with many, many years of experience doing audio editing and production for my radio job. The audio portion of the course was definitely the easiest for me. My photography skills were lacking, but this class has encouraged me and taught me how to take better photos that will be more eye catching in my stories. 

The MDV class is truly the first one of the program where I began to feel like a real journalist. We combined what we’ve learned over the last few months about writing, interviewing, and researching with multimedia to take our stories to the next level.

Reflecting on Multimedia Development and Editing-Online

As many may know, taking an online class, as opposed to a face-to-face class can be a little more difficult. I can tesify to this because I had to retake this course. It’s not that the course was too hard, it just requires a lot. But, that is what I signed up for. I love a challenge. According to the course catalog, the New Media Journalism Master of Arts degree program addresses the opportunities for communication in today’s media industry, with a focus on the mechanics of current technologies and how they enhance both narrative structure and visual storytelling. As I reflect on my goals for Multimedia Development and Editing, I can say that all of the goals I set were met. This is the first course that I met all of my goals for. The goals that I set for myself were as follows; Practice new video interfaces. Use my camera to practice photography and videography, as well as how to upload to different sites. Research and learn how to edit multimedia content.In this course, expected to learn more about videography and editing. By more, I mean the more complicating aspects of everything as opposed to what I learned during undergrad. According to the course syllabus, the course expectations of me were  to learn best practices of photography, photo management, video production, audio production, web skills, and advanced postproduction techniques, and then apply these visual information skills to upload content to a website, mobile device, or application.The content that I felt helped me the most was the audio work. I learned how to tell an audio story and make it interesting by adding natural sound bites. Sound bites makes the story come alive. I am now able to identify the principles of effective audio stories. I also learned some new ways to make my website standout. My website is now more organized and easier to navigate.This course has prepared me for my career as a journalist because I am now equipped the the knowledge I need to write a good story, along with captioned photos. I am able to conceptualize story ideas, and develop a story through an editorial process. These are all course objectives that I accomplished while exploring the elements that make up journalism. I think that retaking this course helped me to understand it better. It was definetely worth it.

Things I’ve had to take in consideration.

Method of recording:

I chose to record my video on my Iphone 5s, I changed my video record setting to 1080pHD and 30 frames per second. This makes a clear image than the default settings as the is a more pixels output. Following my story board I recorded shots and scenes around Manchester on a landscape setting and stored them in a correctly organised folder on my pen drive.

Music and audio:

The background music that I chose for the video is an MP3 file as it’s suitable for the web and working with an MP4. I made sure that I had copyright permission by taking the file from a free audio share site and I will also show the copyright permission in the video caption section. I also wanted to keep some audio of some of my footages, I organised this my importing the footage I didn’t want the audio with as “Footage only” and the footage I did I imported with the audio. I will then edit the decibel for the music and audio so they both can work alongside each other making the music quieter when needed.

Compatibility:

Smartphones and other devices are now able to support different style of files, Mp4 is the format I’ll be wanting to use as it’s best for the web the only issue is it may need to be converted to play on windows media player. Other files such as .avi .mov require software such as Quicktime to play. .mp1 files are now outdated and .wmv is for windows computers and requires a third party plugin to view from mac.

Delivery to audience:

I will upload my video to YouTube for my audience to view, YouTube uses adaptive streaming. Adaptive streaming is where the view is able to watch the video online, the quality of the video changes depending on connection so when the connection is good the video will be high-quality.

Copyright:

To avoid any Copyright offense I will be recording all my own footage and stills. For audio I will ask for copyright permission for the track I want to use and if agreed I will display this information on YouTube information to give credit to the composer.

Libel:

To avoid displaying false information I must make sure any information I have showed had come from a reliable source for example any information I use for MMU I must be able to reference it back to the official MMU information site.

Ethical and Decency:

I must make sure my project is ethically acceptable by making sure footage contains no racism or racist comments. No bad language which may portray the university in a negative way. No discrimination against a group of people such as sexuality, gender, disability. No nudity or violence.

Type style:

I must pick a type face that is clear and easy to read. If a colour is applied it must not clash with the background colour. The typeface must also look professional while also appealing to the target audience.

Images:

All Images I used I must have copyright permission for, however I plan to use my own captured images so this should avoid this problem. I will try and use .png images as they are best for keeping quality on the web.

Document type:

I will export my poster as a .png file. .png uses a lossless compression which means that no data is lost from the image and the quality will maintained on the web.
