Peter Sellers did triple duty in Dr. Strangelove to hilarious effect. Some actors who’ve played multiple roles in one movie.
Alec Guinness in Kind Hearts and Coronets. D: Robert Hamer (1949). An impoverished man who is ninth in line for a dukedom schemes to murder everyone ahead of him in line – all played by Alec Guinness (even the women) and all upper-class monsters or twits – in this great amoral black comedy.
Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor. D: Tom Shadyac (1996). Like the original Jerry Lewis film this focuses on a misfit genius (substituting fatsuit obesity for Lewis’s general nerdiness) who Jekyll-Hyde’s himself into an egotistical ladies’ man. But the movie also gives Murphy an equally fat (and funny) extended family that the actor plays with impeccable comic timing.
Ralph Fiennes in Sunshine. D: Istvan Szabo (1999). Fiennes plays three generations of Hungarians who are betrayed by monarchism, Nazism and Communism in this sad and stirring epic that spans the twentieth century.
Jeremy Irons in Dead Ringers. D: David Cronenberg (1988). This account of identical twin gynecologists who regularly (and surreptitiously) share sexual partners and fall into a destructive cycle of drug addiction and horrific medical malpractice when one of them falls in love. This creepy story is the best thing either Irons or Cronenberg ever did in their long, great careers.
Margaret Hamilton in The Wizard of Oz. D: Victor Fleming (1939). Still think she’s the scariest witch I’ve ever seen. Still think Elmira Gulch is scarier.
