Know the Simple Steps of Solving the Multiplying Fractions Problems

Algebra has many hard concepts and formulas. You have to use the difficult steps to solve some problems. However, fractions are not a difficult topic and you should understand the concept of fractions, as it is important in math. Many algebraic equations consist of the fraction, so you must know how to solve fractions. You must know to solve the problems of multiplying fractions. The steps to multiply two fractions:

Step 1: Multiply the numerators of both the fractions. You will get a new numerator.

Step 2: multiply the denominators of both the fractions. Then, you will get a new denominator.

Step 3: if the new numerator and denominator can be simplified further, then do the right simplification. If they are divisible by a common number, so cancel out them by that number and you will get the answer.

Example of multiplying fractions

For example, if you want to solve the problem given below:

1/4 * 8/3

Step 1: So first multiply both the numerators

You will get 8 x 1 = 8 at top.

Step 2: Then, multiply both the denominator

You will get 4 x 3 = 12 at bottom

Step 3: The fraction becomes, 8/12

It can be simplified further as both 8 and 12 are divisible by 4. So it becomes, 2/3

So 2/3 is the right answer of the multiplication. If you follow these steps, you can easily solve the multiplying fractions problems.  

How to multiply a whole number and a fraction?

Similarly, if you want to multiply a fraction by a whole number, it is simple. Consider the whole number as the numerator of another fraction and multiply it with the numerator of the fraction. Just place the result of this multiplication at the top of the fraction and keep the number at bottom same. So, you will get a new numerator and keep the denominator unchanged. An example is illustrated below to understand the multiplication of whole number and a fraction

4 * 3/14

If you multiply the whole number i.e. 4 by the numerator of the fraction i.e. 3, you will get 12. Write the fraction as below, 12 * 14

Both the numbers at top and bottom of the fraction are divisible by 2. So the answer is,

6/7

Multiplying Factions 

How to multiply fractions is a common among the individuals once they are learning mathematics. However, multiplying fractions is really a matter of multiplying the individual values. For example, if you were given the problem a half times a third, meaning 1 over 2 times 1 over 3, simply line the two fractions up next each other. Multiply the numbers on the top and multiply the numbers on the bottom. In this case, you would do 1 times 1 for the top which is still 1 and 2 times 3 for the bottom which gives you 6. This gives you an answer of 1 divided by 6.

Ø  Multiplying fractions (simple problem)

7/8 x 3/4 = 21/32

Simply multiply the numerators and denominators for the answer.

Ø  Multiplying fractions (reduced to simplest form - cross cancelling)

15/ 25 x 5/30 = 1/5 x 1/2 = 1/10

The two fractions can be reduced to simplest form by cross cancelling out each other's numerator and denominator. The respective numerator of very first fraction (15) and denominator of the second fraction (30) are both divisible by 15. "15" becomes 1 and "30" becomes 2. The same is done for the numerator of very second fraction (5) and the denominator of the first fraction (25). "5" becomes 1 and "25" becomes 5. You are now multiplying 1/5 and 1/2. Multiply the numerators and denominators. The final answer is 1/10.

Dividing Fractions  If, however, you are asked to divide fractions, now it gets a little more complicated. For example, what if we asked you to divide 1 over 4 divided by 3 over 2? In this case, a division of a fraction is really multiplying by the reciprocal. So, all you must do is take the fraction 3 over 2 and flip it so that it now reads 2 over 3.
