deenbeforedunya Has THIS to say in my inbox…
"Hey i’m one of the girls in the Hijabi photo that you guys say were copying Solange. I just want to clarify something. My group of friends and I, we do photo-shoots. We’ve had them for a while and we like to do certain poses and what not. We had a plan to do an all black photo-shoot way before Solange’s wedding pictures came out and when her pictures came out we loved how she arranged all of her friends and family in one color and since we were already doing the black photo-shoot we said why not..?
.. Why not do the same thing. We aren’t trying to appropriate any culture. Poses are there to be copied, and tajweedbruh in no way was implying that bc we have an Ethiopian friend that were allowed to take a pass at black culture. Islam does not see race and we try our best as Muslims not to either. We were not trying to appropriate any culture. Just because we happened to all wear the same color and pose with our arms at our side is not at all saying that we are appropriating blackness.
I hope you understand what I am saying and do not take offense at the picture we took. We’re all young and just trying to have a good time with our friends and create memories. We were in no way trying to offend anyone. Have a great day. Thank you.”
Here’s what I have to say….
While I can appreciate the calm and respectful way you approached me, (which is more than I can say for your friend tajweedbruh) I must correct you on a few things…. As a NON Black person, you DO NOT have the right to tell ME what is or ISN’T appropriation of MY culture.
Now, it may be up for debate among other Black People, whether or not you guys copying the picture is in fact, cultural appropriation, BUT that is a conversation that OTHER BLACK PEOPLE should have.
NOT YOU! And you WILL NOT TALK OVER ME or ANY other Black Person in regards to this or any other issue concerning Black People or Black Culture.
Now, as far as Islam is concerned, I wont sit here and tell you about your religion because that would be shitty of me. So out of respect for it and your culture I will only say that ANTI BLACKNESS is a WORLD wide spread DISEASE that effects MANY people regardless of race, religion or culture.
With that being said. I need you to acknowledge and accept that NON BLACKS in your respective group(s) DO practice anti-black racism and MISS me with that “we don’t see color” bullshit. Its a cop out and its GROSSLY false…
Take some time to educate yourself on these matters when you’re not too busy taking pictures and stealing other peoples ideas… K? Thanks. PS. that goes DOUBLE for you mumbye ...
Once you get this you have to say five things you like about yourself, publicly, then send it to ten of your favorite followers (positivity is cool)
ummmm
