Sushi Time: Sushi Sano, Josephspitalstraße 4, 80331
For me there's a very set way of measuring the quality of sushi.
1. Is it fresh? I once read that the seaweed should be easy to bite through if it is so this is my marker. If I can get two clean bites I'm winning. Otherwise it's the conversation-killing combo of a mouthful of wasabi-spiked rice.
2. The fish. My first sushi visit in Munich resulted in a tuna ISO roll made with tinned tuna. TINNED! (this place was close to Hauptbahnhof and cheap as chips - you've been warned).
And that's it. Fresh ingredients, no food poisoning - it's not difficult to get right, and Sushi Sano proves the point. Located just off Marienplatz and five minutes walk from Sendlinger Tor, this narrow sushi joint is something of an institution so I'm told.
It's known to get really busy but we've been three times now (all in the evening) and have always been seated right away. So, how does it work? You get the menu and mark down what you want. Everything is priced at 1, 1.50 or 2 euros. The cheapness did throw me at first, but it really is good sushi at a very, very reasonable price.
We've tried the tuna, octopus, squid and salmon and every time it's been fresh and delicious.
We can't assert that it's the best sushi in town but it's definitely a contender - and so worth a visit. The average we've paid for each sitting has been 7 euros and you can't grumble at that.
