72.42% Voting Recorded in Himachal Pradesh Urban Body Elections, Polling Remains Peaceful
Voting for urban local body elections in Himachal Pradesh concluded peacefully with an impressive 72.42% turnout in municipal councils and nagar panchayats, while four municipal corporations recorded 63.61% voting. State Election Commissioner Anil Khachi confirmed smooth polling across 51 urban bodies including Dharamshala, Solan, Mandi, and Palampur.
A total of 1,147 candidates contested for 449 seats across the state. Counting for municipal councils and nagar panchayats has already begun, while results for the four municipal corporations will be declared on May 31.
The elections also witnessed isolated incidents — a 70-year-old voter in Chamba reportedly died of a heart attack while heading to vote, and minor commotion briefly erupted at a polling booth in Una involving BJP MLA Satpal Singh Satti.
Despite these incidents, the high voter turnout is being viewed as a strong sign of democratic participation in the hill state.
